Thanks! Although if you look closely you'll notice some pretty appalling use of parcel tape to finish them off...

Off to Edwardes myself right now. I like the faaaaamily business style, they do good work.

Picked the revamped bike up and am happy with it. Only one problem was just after I took it for a blast this evening and parked it up the rear tyre blew off the rim! (Continental gatorskin) Dont know why it happened but it scared the bejeezus out of me! Will go back to Edwardes tomorrow to sort it.

Went there last week and found a senior staff member grumpy and arrogant.

Update on the rear tyre blow off. Took the bike in this morning and they replaced the blown innertube on the spot and it was all fitted and the tyre pumped up again without any quibble. Will keep the pressure at 100 psi instead of 110 and hope it does not explode again.

Lived in camberwell for 4 years, edwardes was mostly a pleasure!
Bit of a lurker who has only just joined, but i'd like to ask a favour of a camberwell local! My brother needs a second hand SS/fixed, could one of you check to see what they have at edwardes? He's only looking to spend £200ish but if they have anything decent i'll send him down.

Desperately searching for black 276mm Sapim spokes, which nobody had, I gave up and got the London distributor list, went down it calling it to see who had them.
Got about 8 nos with varying degrees of helpfulness (including from BLB, Condor, Brixton Cycles, Bikefix etc) before I called Edwardes, who were incredibly helpful - they didn't have them in but said they'd ring the distributor (Chicken Cycles). Rang me back in five minutes then rang me back three times, they are now on the way from the distributor and they've said they'll call when they're in, which should be tomorrow.
Impressive.
@shego, if you still want I need to go down sarf to pick them up, so I could have a look for you?

Oh and second most helpful on the phone goes to...
BLB. Bet that will surprise some people ;)
Maybe I should do a regular mystery shop...

Black Sapim spokes try a decent branch of Evans; got mine from The Cut but Victoria has loads too.

Just had a female friend get done by Edwardes - took her (admittedly pos) gt mtn bike in to sort out indexing and They told her that it wasn't worth fixing - she got persuaded into a part exch (£30!) for a pos £200 nodder bike. Changed her mind in cold light of day and now they are refusing to give her bike / money back. Admittedly I'm getting this second hand but it sounds shabby nonetheless. Anyone got any thoughts / advice on what to do?

Might be worth looking this up on a consumer rights site, retail law site etc to see what the law says about returning things.

Just seems really shit to me - she's ended up with a bike she doesn't want and can't afford to replace. I wonder if they would have treated a bloke the same?

That's odd and doesn't sound like them at all to be honest. Any idea who served her? The bloke I tend to deal with, who's a nice guy, is called Sean, he's always been good as gold and has often knocked a few quid off things for me.
There was one occasion when I took some carbon forks in to be trimmed (literally about 3mm needed to be shaved off the top of the steerer) and one of the slightly older guys that works there tried to convince me it couldn't be trimmed and I should just buy some more spacers. But I dug my heels in and a young guy from the workshop (who was confident it would be fine) trimmed it perfectly in no time. On reflection I think someone less stubborn could well have folded.
If you felt like it and went in with your friend (once you've got the full story from her if you haven't already) I'm sure they'd be open to listening to her. The bloke you want is the slightly older guy, Gary, he's very approachable although he's often busy.

I agree with VanUden. I was hesitant to say anything before, but apart from said girlfriend making a bad choice, which she was never forced to make - EDWARDES come out rather badly in this scenario. If possible, print this page, and take it to "Gary". Mention to him that you only wish him to know that the generally excellent reputation his business has on this forum, is now being put into question. Show him that we are discussing this matter.
He may wish to come to some sort of arrangement with you. I think its an excellent shop, and can only say that apart from their tyres being on the expensive side, I always recommend them as doing a sterling job, and being a very good LBS.

I worked in Camberwell for a couple of years. It is a shit hole. Haven't used Edwardes before, but I can recommend Blafes Bikes in East Dulwich...... Owner Richard is a lovely guy who got my bike in and remembered my name - ahhhhhh, feel the love.

Thanks for the posts guys - I was doing this remotely from Cambridge on an iphone (they really aren't that good are they? Or is it the O2 reception that is at fault?) hence the minimal detail in my post.
I didn't get the full story and won't til I meet her face to face but bottom line is she was obviously really upset with her purchase and Edwardes were unwilling to resolve the situation (not the best way to get repeat custom).
Once I properly find out what happened I'll report back. I'm annoyed because from an outsiders point of view it ***looks like *** her relative inexperience has been exploited leading to her being sold something she didn't want and then intimidated into keeping it.

George at Edwardes knows his nuts and bolts - good lad. Apparently they can do you the Edwardes track frame in any colour you want - included in the normal costs. front forks are carbon though so you better have a colourways to match the black up front!

An example of how individually you can spec it.

went in today and bought a new rear wheel for my bianchi racer i am converting, a freewheel and a new chain. fair enough they did me a deal and got it done quickly but the lad who did it really made a hash of it. now im home i've notived he's obviously used an open end spanner burred my bolts, slipped and scratched my brand hew wheel and given me a 17t shimano freewheel instead of the 16t i requested. bemused, pissed off and utterly shocked at how he returned it to me.....covered in oilly finger prints...WTF sort it the fuck out.!

Go tell them in a calm and considered way and see what happens.
IMHO the best way to judge a shop is how they deal with people who are unhappy.

popped past edwardes yesterday for a new back wheel.
picked up a rear wheel and a trixie lockring tool for 75 quid, gave me a tenner discount on the spot and chucked in some rim tape for good measure.
dead impressed.
The half-wrap to levers bar tap job is wicked! Big fan.
