I can give you some great advice for loosing weight without actually reducing eating. I lost at least 12kg for the etape and it made a massive difference.
I'm pretty scared of the marmotte now, just finished the etape and it was very hard! I still want to do it though! What's the advice?

Eat less, exercise more.

Have two sets of Corimas, they weigh just over 1.4kg with tubs, strong wheels and one set has ceramic bearings, recommend.

Oi, less of that.
I am far fatter than either hippy or you.

Cheers Fiddy. Don't do tubs though. Did anyone buy those bars/stem off you?
cliveo: It's not fat, it's sprinter fuel tanks and/or descending booster

Right here is how I lost loads of weight for the etape this year. For most people your training will ramp up which will be a start. The basis of my diet though was to eat loads early on in the day and taper it throughout so trying to eat as little as possible in the evening. I'd start with a big bowl of bran flakes in the morning like Chris hoy with lots of fruit on. Then cycle to work and have a bannana after my shower. Every few hours I'd eat some fruit or nuts for snacks. For lunch I'd have big meal at the canteen, with soup for starter, would try and avoid chips but didn't do too well at that! During the afternoon I would continue with the fruit and nuts every few hours. I would cut down my evening meal to a minimum and basically if I was training I'd have a bottle of sis rego and that's it, if I wasn't training I'd have a large bowl of soup and if I was planning a long ride the next day (3hrs+) I'd have pasta.
Basically I'd keep my metabolism working throughout the day by continuously eating and also eat enough so i wasn't hungry in the evening. Then only eat smoothies and soup in the evening that are easy to process especially when your body slows down when your asleep. I also weighed myself everyday and used a program to record it on my phone, this helped to see what was working and what wasn't. Don't know how scientifically correct this is but it worked for me.

Sounds similar to when I diagnosed with high BP whilst working night shift and doing uni. I started eating huge breakfasts (7am, 3 bowls of cereal) and eating a late, healthy lunch (2pm, veggie/chicken stir-fry) and then nothing but water until I went to work at 1am. Repeat.
I used to use the large digital post scales to weigh myself. It was the last time I was under 90kg, maybe around 80kg.
I was so skinny (compared to normal) I actually failed to recognise myself in a photo later on. I had sunken cheeks ffs! It's interesting what a health scare can motivate you to do :)

That sounds about right.
So my 1am kebabs after west beers ARE holding me back...

So are my 1pm ones.
I know this thread is primarilly about the Marmotte, but as there's a few people giving good input regarding eating, training, etc, I thought I'd ask this one question.
I had a massive bonk* on the bike on Sunday, first big one for about a year. Previously if I had a serious bonk, next day I would have been fine. But I'm still suffering from the after-effects today, three days after.
I ate well afterwards, chicken wrapped in bacon, boiled potatoes and salad, and have eaten 'normally' the past couple of days since. Any ideas?

HTFU Sam
Virus? Getting old? Lack of training? Not enough food even if eating 'normally'?
-
• #193
HTFU Sam - yes
Virus? - maybe, had a bad cold a couple of weeks back
Getting old? - yes
Lack of training? - maybe, not been doing the miles I would like to do
Not enough food even if eating 'normally'? - a big NO -

Sam - bonk is a glycogen deficiency, generally its best to get some sugar into you immediately after exercise to replace diminished glycogen, and protein ought to be consumed within an hour of exercise
If you did not get sugars in quick enough your glycogen levels will still be depleted
As you pushed your self to bonk levels you may also have been exerting yourself quite heavily, in which case there will also need to be some physical recovery.

Thanks for the info, James.
Been trying to take it easy on my commutes, but hard to when there's a 20mph wind sweeping London this week. Not on the bike the rest of the week after today, hopefully by the weekend I will have returned to a more normal state.

ha ha, all of the above Sam and also possibly mild de-hydration loss of body salts...?
After the Cambersands ride in 2008, I was fucked for two weeks after ride. i remember chatting to fred about it and he said old age.... tru dat.

• #197
good point from Zod re dehydration
one of my fencing coaches would suggest jelly babies for post exercise snack as they are a v quickly absorbed sugar - though doing this v v regularly made steve redgrave diabetic

Had 500ml of Nuun for every hour of cycling I did, so don't think it was dehydration.
I'm now going down the line of old age TBH.
Anyway, enough of this derailment shit, back to the Marmotte discussion, which I have nothing to add, apart from the fact that I won't be doing it.

i use Nuun for hydration but they are not an energy drink (which is why i like them i suffer an energy spike when using energy drinks)
as i dehydrate easily its better that i use fluid for hydration and food for energy
it does sound like you will have run yourself flat with no energy going in

No.
Fuck you and your lists.
You are not my line manager.
There are people drag racing power tools along a wooden track on Sky 523.. it's fucking awesome.
No shit, dickchops.. I would've written it.. 18 times..
I was hoping daccordi was going to tell me where to get good quality amphetamines.
