This is why Mike only races on the track, it's hard to lose your way at HH.

Great route Sam...
Shame you couldn't make it.
Nice to see some new faces to TNRC out last night.
Skidding up hills FTW!
Hope the bike's ok Zed, and hope the noggin's alright Tim - gis a shout about the wheel.
Martin - Good choice. Can't wait to meet the lil fella... when he's house trained!
Wools... dutty...plain dutty -

looking forward to this bmmf. shall we make it the next one in two weeks time dude?
Can do, but I'll try to take the right rdbt exit this time to avoid doing a circuit if Hitchin town centre, and double check the turn at the top of the route - although the view was nice, and a short hop along the Hexton Rd wasn't too bad, despite a massive lorry stuck behind me, kindly obeying the no overtaking road markings.
I think it may be a good idea to cap the ride at 12, or possibly 15 participants. Some of the lanes are quite narrow, and singling up would be a good idea on some of the blindish bends - easier to do with a smaller group.
I'll add more details, but for now:

The 2nd rdbt on the approach to Hitchin - go first left - looks like a massive main road, so I got confused. It's a short stretch to the next rdbt where you go left again.
After Pirton (which you go through in a straight line, ignoring weird road markings), go left at the bottom of the hill onto Shillington Rd, but then you can do the next left, sort of 3/4 back onto yourself. Right at Hexton Rd, then next left up Gravel Hill. Alternatively, try to take the planned route to Higham Gobian, and then left there (the version I failed to navigate properly).
Good luck. The outward route is nice till Codicote, then a fast B-road to Hitchin which you can just bomb along, and then it gets nicer again.

Shoots, I'm appalled with myself. And I wonder why I find them hills so hard. I need to stop eating crap.

Honestly, it's flat - bit like a cross between the Roydon and Chilterns ride; which, based on the fact it's geographically situated between the two, is hardly surprising.

I will have to pass on this for the time being, need to see what sort of time you lads will arrive back in London before committing in any future ride. My last train home from Victoria is 23:50, miss that and I am (pretty much) done for.

LOL. I don't believe, from looking at that, it is as bad as last nights steep one. Though I may be wrong.
On one of the audaxes I did last year, we went through this place in Hertfordshire, that some of the riders were referring to as the mini Alps. Cant remember where it was perhaps its the same climb. Will try to find out

I'm impressed that BMMF has found a 100 metre climb in Hertfordshire. That must've taken some time to find.
If Welwyn Garden City is anything like Hatfield. Then it is well worth avoiding. I know those roads well, as they are my local country excursions. Not that I could be relied on to lead the ride as my sense of direction and navigation is truly appalling. I got lost in Highate once, having lived in Finchley most of my life. Shocking I tell you
