• this whole thread will end in tears

  • yep, tears of laughter

  • LOL, Sans original chain. Don't really cane the bike at all anyway and use it to get to and from pub.

  • such a shame will put them of fg / ss for life

is this forum doing that already?

  • i love people defending unipaks, it generally takes the form "i have had to replace (and taking 3 or 4 from this list)- wheels/brakes/bearings/cranks/chain/stem/hubs/cables/forks/pedals but it works fine now"

FFS these things should not fail within the first few months of owning a new bike

My friend's Unipack that he was given recently is doing fine, because he's not riding it.

  • There is sometimes a Unipack locked around Leather Lane that I see in the mornings with a yellow deep V on the back. :(

  • glad i found this thread, was tempted but now put off for life!

  • I just read this on Prolly's Blog, I guess it's American UO stores only and the moment, but it's just a matter of time before they come over here?

Looks like a Unipack, despite the fact that they're branded Republic.

I just saw this and back to this thread to post it, you guys beat me to it.

They are definetely still the same bikes, unipack is just a british distro company that sells many other types of bikes.

Republic had the cheek to steal the animated colour-change graphic created on this forum!!

  • I have a hard time believing that someone who claims to be a mechanic can say that these bikes are mechanicly sound, given the large number that we get coming into our shop for...oh...everything going wrong on them.

My favorite was the guy who hopped off a curb at a funny angle and bent his forks out.

I doubt many road bikes (remember the unipack/create is a ss/fixed roadbike) would take very well to being hopped off curbs.
It's a cheap bike for riding around on, not a jump bike ffs.

  • Indeed, bike standards in general are not very high these days. I am too a bike mechanic and many of the popular bikes sold in the shop are in terrible condition straight out of the box. Misaligned frames, bent disc rotors, overtightened cones & BB's all extremely common and totally meeting Britisg standards.

I'm not sure I agree with you. Coming off a height of less than 6 inches should be fine for most bikes, especially a steel one of that weight. Fixed, hybrid or road, the only bike I wouldn't want to do that to is an extremely cheap one (which I have to admit, the Uni isn't; can you believe that Tesco do a bike for thirty quid? wtf?!) or an older model of Brompton, and the Brompton only because I never got the hang of the back end flapping about like a wet duck anytime you introduce it to gravity. But I digress.

I have to admit that we are fairly lucky with our bike builds, I haven't run into too many problems with the Surly, Treks and Specialized bikes that come through the store, besides the fact that I think Trek does the zip ties up on their wheels too tight and it un-dishes the wheel.

  • Nhatt- this is the only bike I could find at Tesco for £30: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-0889.aspx

Are you aware of another one?

  • Cool bike:

    Shame it's shit quality.

After a start like this, what other cycling experience could possibly top this?

  • @ mechanical vandal

i wouldn't compare jumping off kerbs to what you do on a jump bike

  • they sold a 30quid BMX at christmas

  • From the Republic Website :

Pad has lock loop and is available in four colors: White, Black, Green and White.

    Skills.

  • Hmm. I remember they had adds up in bus shelters last year for a thirty quid number, maybe it was a loss leader and they stopped doing it.

I wish my bike had eyes.

It was probably a Playmobil bike.

  • I remember it nhatt, you tell the truth. I threatened to buy one for my gf...

  • What do you mean jumping off kerbs? I jump off kerbs every day. Carbon fork too... No wuckin forries!

  • No wuckin forries!

    she'll be right.

  • Saw one of these Create bikes yesterday up close and personal at a set of lights.

Looked like it was stock, but with Sugino 75's. Was proof indeed that you can't polish a turd.

  • Well.. I have to confess,I did it.. I bought one (create), and three days later is was leaking! and making crackling noises. I just managed to give it back to the shop and will invest the money in something that would last more than 3 days!

  • a friend bought one and he should have known betterer, though when he came home with it I rolled my eyes...

If you change anything first change the goddamned brake cables ok? He had to stop hard...and low and behold, the nipples broke ...at once....and he had to bail.

People can try to defend them but hey, why defend that shit? I'm not a snob, I don't mind cheap, if cheap isn't bloody dangerous, and they are hugely dangerous, and if you do anything other than 'tootle' about on them then they are death traps.

    please be careful.

  • Quite right.
