don't people take things for a test drive/ ride anymore
-
• #1028
Indeed! the bike feels OK for a few hours... then I noticed something wired... grease comming out of the crank, which got loose later on. NO GOOD!!!!
-
• #1029
Good point, I had to tighten up the crank, without much luck..
anyway I wasn't very happy with the way it all felt after a couple of rides.. -

I'm looking at these bikes, has anyone heard of this guy? He seems cool, http://singlespeed.angelfire.com/
-
• #1031
what, £20 bangers for £300?
yeah, great value.
look people, just buy the fucking langster/plug/bowery/fuji/whatever
there are a multitude of otp "fixies" to satisfy the impatient newcomer, you get a warranty ffs

and more than half of those bike were designed for 27" wheel, and i'm pretty sure that it'll handle pretty dull and unusual compared to a good OTP.
after all, OTP minus the unipack were well-designed, especially the Plug, Langster, etc.

the charges do look nice...

Looks can be deceiving £170 gumtree unipac/create crap
but it looks exactly like something someone wants me to build

Hi, I see above that truli asked about http://singlespeed.angelfire.com/
I got one from there, the guy is called Dani and he seems a good sort.
While some may be critical of the bikes and some recommend them, it would be worth going for a few test rides - both on his bikes and on others.
I tried a large variety of bikes and I felt that one of his bikes suited my needs and was a good/comfortable fit. Good luck with the bike search and start trying a few out, cheers, Jon

• #1037
or try one of his bikes and build it your self, more satisfying and don't pay over the odds that way
-
• #1038
too much money, just because someone sound okay doesn't mean they're good.
-
• #1039
You can convert old 10 speeds for much less than that, I'd say do it yourself, cheaper and much more satisfying.
-
• #1040
cheap old bike, 2nd hand rear wheel (with cog presumably) from the forum, few tweak and bob your uncle.

i feel like an absolute doughnut!!!! i've bought one of these pieces of crap, i've hardly ridden it but when i took it out for a spin today, it was creaking all over the shop. I wished i'd forked out more cash now, but i can't in all good conscience sell it off to so some poor sod to get myself summink good. Tbh i don't really wanna ride it now!!! i'm not put of fg/ss though, this was my first one and while is was blissfully unaware it was great fun to ride!!! Could someone who's knows about bikes (clearly isn't me) suggest what i can do or buy to make this piece of crap safe to ride.
-
• #1042
see if the shop will take it back
-
• #1043
See reeen's posts earlier in this thread: his unipack is now ridable, he has spent about £1,000,000,000 doing it up.
-
• #1044
it was one of the ebay shops so might be difficult especially since i've ridden it already
-

These are the medusa of bikes
once you take the back brake off, new chain, introduce the concept of oil to it, get 50 punctures because tyres are shit, its time to cut your loses on this bike.
The creaking is weird on these, its from the bottom somewhere, but in an undetermined location.
I guess they are cheap, look ok etc but are a bad introduction to ss/fg bikes.
rbutt88, maybe stick it on gumtree, you will probably get what you paid for it. -

the BB simply need to be greased.
-
• #1047
i took the bike to my local bike shop and the mechanic there had a look over it for me. He said that basically nothing had been greased on it. He greased up the cranks (where he thought the creaking was coming from) and i've had no trouble with it creaking since.
He said that the chain was a KMC chain and that it actually looked pretty decent and was the only thing on the bike properly greased. He also said that the welds on the frame looked neat a decent too. I've been riding it quite a bit and it seems to me to be quite a smooth ride, but then again i don't have anything to compare it to. I think i'm gonna ride this for a while and as my 21st is coming up ask for money to spend on parts for a new build and build one myself. Using a dolan frame, i've heard they are quite good? Good thing is it hasn't put me off fg/ss at all.

this is also the same site that the amsterdam fixed gear site runs out of. good to pop into when you fancy a trip over here and need some tips....
