Never ridden a sportive before, but thinking about this: www.touroftheblackmountains.com, mostly because its on the right weekend. There are some comments about last year's on this thread, but can't tell if anyone has done it? Any good?

you do know that just 1 week later you could do the pendal pedal for a fraction of the price, and ride a better (imho) route...

I did it a couple of years ago. It's a tough event over some heavy roads. It had rained heavily in the week before the race and some of the roads were extremely slippery, I saw 3 or 4 crashes in the first 20 miles, mainly on uphill sections.
I enjoyed it though. It's what jonny would describe as 'honest'. :-)

anyone fancy this? same weekend as the Rapha Blackpool sportive. Buckinghamshire might not boast anywhere near as nice scenery, but if you're time poor like me it's much quicker to get to from London (and one third of the cost).
trains direct to Gt Missenden from Marylebone

Me and a couple of mates are doing it.
Did it last year and it was tough but enjoyable hence the return fixture. Weather was baking hot, roads were quiet apart from one dodgy dual carriageway stretch and it was well organised.

Just signed up. Baking hot would better than pissing down, as it is here, now.

Cool. Looking at the advanced weather forcast it looks as though it might be good weather again.
BTW - I'll be the fat lad in Rollapaluza CC kit.

I'm on an older black Cervelo, likely off the back somewhere, trying not to get caught by the sweep car.

No hangovers here chop. This france place must have good clean and:or pissweak beer. Even mixin it up with wine and champs still didn't slow me down.
I'm off the juice now until after finishing marmotte.

Finished the Etape in 7hrs53mins, ventoux was so hard in the forest it was 36C. Really enjoyed it all though best bit was drafting boardman for an hour, the stuff he was doing on a bike was incredible and effortless.
yes very very lucky.
but - (without wanting to sound too luch like anyone's dad) hopefully everyone who saw the crash or even the aftermath is going to be riding a LOT more carefully on their next event, which can only be a good thing.
I think quite a few people like him failed to heed warning signs (there was one before that particular hairpin, for instance), or just cos they're out in the semi-country, they assume that nothing is going to be coming the other way...
