• Well, recently (in the last week or so) my bike has blessed me with an odd "click" sound.
It happens precisely once every pedal revolution, so I'm thinking not the chain. Also the pedals are new, so I can't blame them either. Even if it was the pedals then why would it occur at precisely the same crank position each time?

I'm thinking (although not liking) the idea that it's the BB. It's an audible click, but everything seems (and feels) smooth.

If I get a sound at the same crank position every time is it the BB? Should I be worried?

  • there are loads of these threads popping up recently! It might be the crank arm, i had the same problem and it was the cranks wedging themselves on the bb spindle. Search 'clicking sound' or something like that. There are a million other things it could be, can't remember them all.

  • mine made noises. it was the left crank arm creaking on the bottom bracket. i just filled everything with grease and forgot about it. not thought about it since.

    not the best advice :)

  • It's your knees...

  • weird, I've nearly posted about this too in the last few days after probably a few months of increasing clicking sounds. I re-greased the bb - so it wasn't that. I changed the cartridge bearings and it was still there so wasn't them; yesterday I swapped my wheel over for another rear wheel I have had lying around for ages, new lockring, new cog, same old chain and the clicking wasn't there. So it was something to do with the wheel itself. So today I talked about it with someone knowledgeable and the next thing is to put the new cog on my usual, clicking back wheel. It may be the cog, clicking because it's got some irregularities to it, mayeb from wear, and these are knocking ever so sligthly on the wheel as it goes round. I hope it is the cog - I can just replace it for minimal cost if it is. If the clicking persists then then I'm stumped again.

The upside of all this mystery is in trying to eliminate different things I've basically got my bike serviced nice and smooth again....

  • More seriously, check your chainring bolts...

  • Your new wheel could also have a slightly different chainline PJ?

  • Will everyone just stop with the smutty innuendos and talk about bikes please?

  • Your new wheel could also have a slightly different chainline PJ?

suggesting what dude? undeniably it has but how does this affect the clicks diagnosis?

  • sorry, at stormalx - I'm a bit wrapped up in my possibly more mysterious clicking case.. chainring bolts tighten / crank bolts tighten and then bb regrease/replace are starting points.. bb sorting out does solve an awful lot of strange knocks and clicks.

  • Fixed again, the clicking noise was still there, but not so noticable when the cranks wasn't tightened.

it turn out that the Campangolo chainring on a Miche Advanced cranks wasn't entirely in-line with the chain, it was at less a little under a millmetre out and consquencey cause the clicking sound (I think, or the teeth shaped slighty different to the Miche).

swapped it back to the Miche Advanced chainring - perfection.

  • any idea which tool shifted it? ive got one i need to get off....

  • If you want to get your freewheel off, you need a two or four notch freewheel tool. I have the four notch one now. E3.

  • thanks chicken... just the job - im up in narrrich so cant take you up on the offer but will get one of the web - why the the tools always cost x3 the price of the thing they remove? %-/

  • Hi all, new SPDs on a new build. Work fine apart from when I get up off the seat and pedal hard, maybe when going uphill. Only when I'm off the seat the left side SPD seems to click in the same position on each revolution.

I have checked everything is nice and tight and cannot see anything wrong.

    Anyone else had this?

  • is it a "click" or like a rattle?

  • Its a click, I can feel it almost.

  • not too sure then

  • Are you sure it's the pedal?

I've had something similar and after investigation put it down to flex in the frame causing the chain to tick on a chain ring. I could have been wrong though as it's one of those nearly impossible to diagnose problems. I never had any problems with it and it eventually went away.

Sorry not much help but more of a story of my ticks.

Hello murtle. I buy you beer soon. Congrats.

  • i've had 'clicks' in my spds, its usually the bearings when your applying lots of force, i.e. when your going uphill. . .
either buy a new pair/return them or get the bearings serviced, sometimes with SPDs you get poorly made bearings in them, i did when i got mine and they clicked from the beginning

  • My ones are clicking as well. I just got used to it. :)

  • Check they are tight and the threads are greased

  • Seems to be sorted, removed both pedals and greased the threads and refitted. Cheers for the advice.

  • Glad to be of help
