  • You're right about not copying anyone, but wrong about Rapha's design as being anything other than great.

I think he means that their design would be bad for us, not that it is bad.

  • +1 on what Corny says, and if you think we've missed a glaring obvious section out please say.

  • Another thing, although it may be too ambitious, would be to edit the book in such a way that there are little running gags throughout that may not be obvious at first. Something to make the whole thing hang together.

This sounds like a an idea for a Masquerade Alleycat.

  • awesome idea fella, may have an image or 2 to contribute for sure

  • hey all, [...]
General London Riding - Looking for a new name for this section.

  • You're right about not copying anyone, but wrong about Rapha's design as being anything other than great.

Right? Wrong? Good? Bad? All a matter of opinion isn't it?

Generally I think Rapha's design is rather nice (as are their clothes).

However you really have to take anything produced by a company who've just launched a £3k tailored tweed cycling suit with a massive pinch of salt.

Photoben got the right end of the stick. Not bad, just inappropriate. Read first, comment after.

  • So there has been a lot of talk recently about fund-raising for the forum.

After consulting a few peeps, I've had an idea. Basically we can make a LFGSS Book, which is completely user-generated. I'd appreciate any feedback or ideas, but it would be a good quality coffee table style book, filled with mainly photos but also design work and maybe some text.

The main point of this would be that everyone would get a page or a photo in, so it involves everyone (i.e. nice book, people can say their work is in it.). Think 200 people put in a photo each - 200 page book.

It would encompass all parts of the forum, say in different chapters, Long Rides, Drinks, Tricks, Polo, Rolla Races and anything else you can thing of. Also get some of the larger group shots in so everyone possible is in the book somehow.

I've got a few quotes based on a 200 page book for a 200-300 print run, and selling it at £15 (maybe 20?) we could make a grand easy for the forum, on the basis that everyone that contributes buys one. I realise this would have limited selling outside of the forum, but who knows maybe if it works other forums might buy some and do one for their forum to may money.

So what do you think? Everyone gets a book that they/their work is in, celebrates life on the forum and we make some dough for VB to buy a new server.

sorry just read this. why not include a london centric dvd or riding, tricks and polo sorta of fast fridays meets bootleg sessions? might give it wider appeal and more value for not much more cost...

    +1

  • Oh, and tags--we need tags on the pages.

    +1
    The less relevant the better

    That would be cool.
I hereby volunteer to provide the music for the soundtrack.

  • Another thing, although it may be too ambitious, would be to edit the book in such a way that there are little running gags throughout that may not be obvious at first. Something to make the whole thing hang together. For instance, one of my favourite series of images is the 'Bikes that look like animals' thread. They could be spread out over a couple of pages, one at a time, while there is still other content on the main part of the page. Stuff like that--or maybe columns, rubrics, hidden things.

wired has semi random fact quotes at he bottom of every page unrelated to the page, could quote the forum throughout and leave some in jokes for those in the know to make it more forum like...

also i think have a corner or two as flip book animation would be great...

    Get to fuck.

  • Get to fuck.

Say what? Do you work for them or something?

Not trying to piss anyone off. Internet beef is stupid.

  • I'd like to see a pointless argument reproduced on every fourth page please.

    :D

    sounds good :)

  • Don't say things like 'read first, comment after' then.

fair enough. Does sound a bit rude on second reading, I think your initial reply rubbed me up the wrong way.

  • Rouleur, Bootleg sessions, Fast Friday etc, it would be nice if it WASN'T anything like these, it should be original.

London has a rich and diverse culture, with many creative people on this forum, to be overly influenced by what has come before would be unfortunate in my opinion.

It would be nice if it had it's own identity, be reflective of London, it's people, it's roads, it's events, it would be nice if it was irreverent and sarcastic, like so many people here.....

If original it will be far more likely to be popular instead of being written off as a copycat.

    Just thinking aloud.

  • ^But you're just thinking aloud in the style of the original Gold Sprints. That's so fucking derivative.

  • the what? never heard of that, we are apostolically linked to the golden age of ROLLER RACING....via Eddie Wingrave and Saint Tipper.

  • I think you've more in common with the spin class scene. Rollapaluza: coming to a Virgin Active / Fitness First near you soon...

  • In no particular order

    Polo
    Drinks/Beers
    Track
    Rides
    Tricks
    Fixing (Mechanics)
London's Famous London (general riding around town)

Hm, perhaps some section drift (rough book equivalent to thread drift) is needed: Since when has anything ever stayed on topic anywhere on the forum? Loosen it up?

I love thread drift. To me, one of the best features of the forum is that there's no zealous policing that threads stay 'on topic' but that there's a good sense of freedom and fun in getting into the most obscure diversions. I would think that the book might make an attempt to be reflective of that?

  • Those familiar with J. Friel, The Cyclist's Training Bible, might be aware of the random 'Historical Training Tips' that precede each chapter, e.g. '1946... A stunt that we have often used in road training is to walk rapidly for about half a mile but carrying the bicycle with your arm cocked...'. I suspect we could subvert these... Or at least stick in 'Great Forum Fights' before each chapter
