  • I think it's a great idea. I'd like to contibute a page!

  • lol, i think we've got an Amazing book right there, i'd buy it!

    again, Fixed!

    but a bit off topic...

I was given a book called Ready Made for my birthday this yeah,
design wise it's really simple, but it really works, could it maybe something a bit like this? but that's a bit like copying...

    anyway, just an idea

  • yeah that one =D

i love it, the way that the hardbackness is level with the rest of the pages, if that makes sense...

but yeah, it's good inspiration (i think)
i had something else in mind, but i can't think of it,

If you want a page doing, I'll have a go =)

  • Can we get that picture of OOL on the first page with the immortal words 'do you know who I am?' emblazoned across it?

  • Wicked idea. Totally wizard. Fakenger top trumps design for the individual cyclist sections? Think that concept was bandied around a while ago.....

  • I noticed that someone mentioned looking at rouleur for inspiration earlier in the thread.

...can I suggest that any similarities with Rouleur or any Rapha stuff is avoided.. I think in design it doesn't speak in the right voice, the typography is too conceived and "classic" to be representative.... as is the photography, all that faux-1930's race imagery doesn't really seem right. I think the book has a lot more to offer than that.

  • definitely.

  • a possible idea for a possible my contribution is to call a day for a massive forumgers meeting, taking two different landscape pictures of people and bikes, with camera film in hi resolution.

Location and date to discuss with the editors.

  • really excited about this... well looking forward to getting involved.

  • oh hell yeah =DD

  • Another thing, although it may be too ambitious, would be to edit the book in such a way that there are little running gags throughout that may not be obvious at first. Something to make the whole thing hang together. For instance, one of my favourite series of images is the 'Bikes that look like animals' thread. They could be spread out over a couple of pages, one at a time, while there is still other content on the main part of the page. Stuff like that--or maybe columns, rubrics, hidden things.

Happy to help with proofreading and editing, by the way, although that already seems to be covered.

Good initiative, Ben--great timing, too. An old idea whose time has come.

Why was this not a T Shirt design idea?

  • Oh, and tags--we need tags on the pages.

  • Why was this not a T Shirt design idea?

i'd love to see that picture

  • Damn, I think I've missed out on getting the £££s for producing that shirt.. dibs on a cut of the money that shirt makes, if it's ever made

Yes, they have both done that very well, and I don't want just a copy of what they have done. It'll be a book from a internet forum, so a more contemporary feel is preferable, but we'll see what ideas the designers come up with.

But don't worry it won't be all Nathan Barley - well maybe the tricks section ;-)

    Thir-fucking-teen!

  • lol.

  • You know what would be cool for the tricks section, little photos of bike parts those riders have broken faded into the background behind text or in between images as a kind of backdrop the background for the images (if that makes sense?), that would look kinda cool.

  • or perhaps in the polo section (as above) but with photos of injurys

    mmm, this isn't sick?

  • Type over images = bad idea

You're right about not copying anyone, but wrong about Rapha's design as being anything other than great.

  • hey all,

some great ideas and offers of help, many thanks, got a really good feeling about this project, me and photoben are in the process of setting up an email address so people can send through submissions/ideas/offers of help, until then keep posting stuff up in this thread.

Its great we've had potentially 110 people sign up to purchase a book, and 80 odd willing to contribute a page.

Provisionally we're thinking these would be the chapters/sections, so have a look and think where your work/idea/photo/prose piece could sit.

    In no particular order

    Polo
    Drinks/Beers
    Track
    Rides
    Tricks
    Fixing (Mechanics)
London's Famous London (general riding around town)
