What's your top speed?

• I'm yet to ride that. Some scumbag from norf lundun needs to show me where it is.. cliveo.. you like hills right?

Come along to Norths next week!

• You guys do realise that most of those smiley 30mph LED sign things just flash randomly/scheduled? during the day?

You're not setting them off you are just seeing them flashing.

Funny... The one I am talking about actually displays the speed below it. So unless they have magically anticipated when people will be speeding up and slowing down, then it does actually work...

• I like to go fast, I don't care what some onboard computer is telling me really, but then sometimes I need it to tell me how hard I am and what a huge dick I have and it is a lot cheaper than going to a prostitute.

• Those wireless jobs can be a bit prone to interference. Mine seemed to be badly affected by police radios, outside Scotland Yard it once told me I was doing 105 kph, I'm fairly sure it was mistake cos I was locking the bike to a lampost at the time.

Thing is I'm out in the Norwegian country side riding a bike with not so much as a light attached to it. Seems to be the sender (the bit on the fork), unless the little magnet passes it just right, it doent register it.

I was riding pretty fast, fixed, bent over the bars, trying to adjust it upwards, with my hand (that includes my still broken finger). When I clipped my finger on a spoke, and figured it probably best just to leave it.

TBH I dont like having the speedo on my fixed anyways, I was mainly just curious about my speed variation in comparison to riding the same terrain with gears.

(PS. Hippy you're wrong about those speed warnings, I'll bet my bike on it, well the mrs's bike anyhows)

• Hi, how can I work out my cadence at a given speed at a given ratio? Is there an easy rule of thumb. I suppose it also depends on the size of your wheels and tyres...

For example 32mph at 42/16 with 700 wheels?

Anyone, class, beulah?
Anyone?
Anyone?

Calculate your gear inches and multiply by Pi.
This give you distance traveled per crank revaloution in inches.
Divide distance travelled (in inches) in 1 minute by this number.

Clear as mud.

(assuming 23mm tyres)
69 x 3,14 = 216,7
(32x63360/60) / 216,6 = 156

or

Use this http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/ to calculate 'meters development' and divide by distance travelled in 1 minute (in meters).

Well that's hardly a smiley face 30mph sign is it?

You are talking about a different type of sign. The 30mph ones (at least the ones I ride past) have no radar in them - they are simply a flashing sign. The ones that say "You are doing xxMPH" well gee wizz I reckon they might just have a radar in them..

• (PS. Hippy you're wrong about those speed warnings, I'll bet my bike on it, well the mrs's bike anyhows)

No, actually, I'm not. I even found the signs they use online whilst I was betting with TheCatMan. There are some with no radar, some with optional radar and some that are very obviously radar-equipped.. ie the ones that say "your speed is xxMPH". You are obviously talking about a different sign.

Anyway, Norway? wtf would you know about London's signage? :P

• On the main subject matter though, the stretch of road down from Galibier between Plan Lachat and Valloire has got to be one the best downhill rides going. 10km all downhill and hardly any hairpins but not so steep that you're clutching the brakes all the way. Awesome. Probably not the highest speed I've ever done but for sheer sustained high speed cycling it is fantastic. Of course you got to get there the hard way first.

You've done the easy side of the Galibier to get there. Wimp. ;p

This sign had a smiley face and the speed displayed. So it is completely a smiley face 30mph sign in my book.

There's one on Remenham hill on the way into Henley-on-Thames (flashing 'SLOW DOWN' type). Used to drive past it all the time (lived in Henley for 6 years). When I remembered to brake a bit it did'nt flash but when I forgot (you go from 60 to 30 here so it catches alot of people) it always caught me. Its also on my old running route, and I never saw it go off without a car present. If you are talking about a specific camera in london, then I suppose it could be a different type.

You can have the mrs bike regardless, its doing my nut in riding a ladybike to work. Just cover the postage and I'll tell her I lost it ;)

I found that I pretty consistently cycle at an average of 30Kph. That gives me a average cadence of 80rpm, which sounds a bit shit. Time for a lower gear methinks.

You Fail.

Thanks but I'm trying to cut down... :)

• Has anyone else noticed some of those sensors that tell you to slow down are super-sensitive? Ive had one tell me to slow down when I was in a 30 zone, I was doing 20. Even checked behind me thinking there was no way it could be me who had set it off but the road was blissfully empty!

It could be their radar is getting a reading from your spokes, which near the top of your wheel will be moving almost twice as fast as you are.

• @Hippy.
Just used that Analytic cycling site to do some calculations for a fixed climb that I will be doing soon.

I'll be using 41:23 over 21km to an altitude of 1.5km. I was looking to at least beat 2 hours, but according to http://www.analyticcycling.com/GearSelectionTouring_Page.html I'll need to maintain 200 watts to achive this. Crap question, but does that sound like alot to ask?

• @hippy

I am on an iPhone so couldn't easily do a link or embed an image.

But the fact is...

you=fail :-)

• Ha ha.

Hippy = Fail

• You've done the easy side of the Galibier to get there. Wimp. ;p

Heh, I thought someone might infer that. Went from St Michel De Maurienne via the Telegraphe and back the same way.

• The proper way then. Chapeau. :-)

How much do you weigh? Are you slightly built or do you look like the side of a shed?

200W isn't much for me (easy cruising speed, say 25kph on the tops in low wind) and shouldn't be an issue for most people that have done any amount of cycling and aren't at the 50kg end of the chicken leg scale.

You're on an iphone so perhaps that is the reason you have failed to follow this thread.
So, you = fail or iphone = fail.
I'm not bothered but there's some serious fail going down in your part of town.

• Hippy = Fail

Many times. But in this case, that other geezer is talking about a completely different sign. A "30mph sign" != a speed measuring sign that has changing. Total fail on his part.
