Leads to the question, what do Mercian do that Bob Jackson don't? (assuming they are using the same tubesets) and is it worth £250?
Custom build (the £350 Bob is OTP).
Hand cut lugs? (although I'm pretty sure this not on all the frames).
They also bang on a bit about their brill firing process, in the catalogue (could be just blurb though).

If it is custom build then that explains it as they can't 'cookie cutter' them out (what a wanky american term I just used there!)

The bike shop on Essex Road in Islington sells them.

Anyone know if they sell the forks separately? After a set of 1 1/8 straight forks and can't find any anywhere.

Cheers Ed. Yes £100 is high but not many options, plus a polished alloy fork wouldn't look out of place. Trying to lose the amount of "fatties fit fineness" from the Steamroller as it looks like I should be running 27" wheels.
Although a shorter fork would drop the front down making the top tube slope slightly downwards so I might be better off just waiting for a tighter frame to come up on eBay first and just sell mine on (although I do think Steamrollers are good frames)

it is high when you can get some decent one from BLB for less than half that price, and Alex you're not framing that!

An eyeopener to some maybe but the 350 pound BJ frames come straight outta Tai fucking Wan. Do the maths, it can't be done for that price in this country....

if that is the case then the price should rise by 25% imminently as taiwan goods are priced in dollars and all cycling stuff has gone up by that amount in the past weeks due to the week pound.
if they are made over here then the reynolds tubes shouldn't go up in price as commodities prices haven't seen the same increases plus tubes are not shipped to taiwan then back again as bikes. -

Okay, let's do the maths.
631 tubeset - anyone know price?
Lugs - price?
Paint - price?
Labour - estimated hours? We can then see how much money goes on labour and whether it would be viable to pay a UK person £1 per hour!

I saw one of these in Garlands, Bedminster - it kind of struck me as the same kind of style over substance as Charge but with a higher price tag!

@Jos - Got a source for that ? I remember they've been accused of that before, but they've denied it. Be interested to see if you have any proof
Hmmmmm.... not at hand and seeing it was 3 am when I posted it I should have maybe kept my mouth shut.
There is however a lot of this stuff going on in the bike trade in general. Never any hard proof but if you go to the international bike shows, talk to people and keep your eyes open you'll figure it out.
Fact of the matter is that close to 90% percent of all the bikeparts that you buy (new not vintage) come from Taiwan or there abouts these days.
Not talking about very small firms but the big ones.

Sammy, A decent tube set, silver and paintjob will cost you between 300 and 400 pounds. Are you trying to say that the kind people at BJ work there for free out of a love for the company and that the shops are kind enough not to mark up the frames ??
I am not in any way trying to slag of BJ and the more expensive frames are made in the UK. Same story goes for a lot of other frame builders too including Mercian Condor and yes shock of all shocks even the CInelli steel models.
Don't forget the fact that a Taiwanees person can probably wield a torch just as well as the next British / Italian person.
People just want cheap bikes / frames and there is only one way of doing that. Look at all the commotion witcomb received when they jacked there prices up to a more realistic level.
If you still don't believe me go and ask Ross at Brixton cycles. He builds some excellent steel frames and is currently charging about 400 pounds for them. Unfortunatelly for him this includes everything but the 20 hours of labour he puts in.......

Fixie Inc Betty Leeds frame at £750 - good deal or no? Opinions sought...
-

If you got £750 to spend on a frame then its a good deal.
I once bought a bike for 1,700 pound, it was a good deal, I still ride it 3 years on.
everything is relative.
