  • Is that a 3 x 6 setup, with a Hope pro 2 trials/single speed hub?

After silly amounts of research, Ive decided to go for that hub for my current build. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it (both with and without gears).

Fixed? is that some cunning disc mount type fixed cog?
I'm keeping it singlespeed for a while but the idea was 29 middle and 44 outer chainrings on the front (no granny) and nine on the rear most likely 11-26.

The fixed is indeed an ISO mounted cog, unfortunately pre Londonfixiebike sdo it's a hand drilled affair.

Hubwise I'm running Hope Pro IIs but can fully recommend the Trials SS hub as I've used it before, never tried it geared though.

  • In!
    Early Saturday please?
...post-ride drinks on the train are mandatory. Re-Hydration innit.
Early Saturday, like meet at the train station by 8?

  • Anyone had thoughts on routes?

I've used this site a lot for the Cumbrian / Scottish stuff - Not managed to do any good MBing in the south yet though. http://www.offroadadventures-online.com/sde.asp

Gives us 2 rides for South Downs..

Dunno. The ones up north were all really bloody good rides (the ones Ive done anyway) - Could be a good starting point if we don't have anything better?

    Nearly guessed it ;(

I'm going for the trials hub as I want to build a non-dished rear wheel. It will be single speed as long as my legs hold out (will be mountain riding). I will then probably go 1x6, or even 2x6 with a big outer ring aimed at road use.

    Cheers, and enjoy getting dirty.

  • What's this 6 speed hope rear hub? Have they done that so you get a dishless wheel or something. Seems like a good idea I'd sacrifice some gears for increased wheel strength.

  • Object - thats about right mate - 8-8:30ish mean we can get back by mid-late afternoon
If we decide upon a particular train then I can jump in at clapham jn and fbr a bit later... some of you lot will be getting on in central of course.
    1 - object
    2 - Gabes
    3 - tommy
    4 - fatboyralph
    5 - Rob M
    6 - mowfo ?
    7 - hillbilly
    8 - prav

  • What about good old Dorking or somewhere else close to London

I'd like to do the South downs Way too but it's a fair bit further and hence more time consuming and expensive to get to hence is only really worth doing for a real marathon day which while still very possible is not always the best fun in the middle of winter. Just a point like.

  • Dorking FTW IMO... unless we are staying out all day / night.
Perhaps we can do the bigger mission next time - baby steps and all that.

Basically its a standard hope pro II rear hub with a shorter cassette body (room for up to 6 rings). Apparantly builds into a dishless wheel (cassette space balanced by disc mount). Its designed for trials, which I know f**k all about.

It was explained to me that MTB trials rules required a geared mountain bike, otherwise i'm sure they'd all be fixed, and a six gear minimum was set, probably that 18 gears was the norm.
This annoyed me a little because i'd quite like hope to make an ss hub with their lovely freehub tech but with only space for 1 cog, i'd settle for space to cram in 3 if you weren't using spacers to get best alignment of your 1 cog.

looks like the 'normal' hub has been run ss. Are they yours? Is the freehub body different material or is the non trials just dulled through age? I'll just go look it up actually.

  • i have a profile 6 speed hub on my SS it's zero dish so a strong wheel. it was originally designed for 4-x and dual slalom racing and is the correct width to fit 6 cogs from an 8 speed road cassette (just leave off the biggest 2) has really quick engagement and makes a very loud clicky noise.

  • Dorking sounds good to me.

  • I don't really mind where we go, I just want to get further offroad that a 5aside football court.
Tell me where to meet and what time and I will be there!

  • I nominate tommy to organise.
All those in favour say 'happy pig'.

I believe it also has a higher ratchet count to provide more positive engagement.

    You sow.

  • You know the story with tommy and the pig, right...?
When he was a young boy tommy was molested by a randy male pig.

And a steel body as apposed to alu in the normal hubs.
