  • i think i will most likely go with clipless
i cant wait to get this bike ready
im itching to ride again since my last bike got stolen!

  • hey,
    this is my first post
im building my first fixed wheel at the moment(ill put some pictures up soon!)
ive been thinking about riding clipless pedals on it would i be better starting off with straps and clips or should i be okay? ive got a front brake before anyone asks :)

If you've ridden clipless before on another bike, then I don't see what's wrong with going clipless on a fixed build.

It's all about taking your time to get used to riding fixed. You need to be attached to the pedals in some way, so clips+straps .vs. clipless is pretty much academic. Go with what you're comfortable with.

  • clipless is probably safer than straps... clips are cooler (imho) and much more convenient. down to personal preference really!!

personal preference indeed, but clipless isn't exactly idea if you're using the bike for more than just commuting (i.e. going to town, etc.), especially since sounding like Robocop walking isn't exactly fun.

you don't HAVE to go for clipless/strapped in when you first ride a fixed wheel bicycles, as long it got a brake, but very essential once you get the hang of it.

  • Specs are
    Bob Jackson Vigorelli 653 49cm
    Chris King Gripnut H/set
Record Pista Crankset with matching Chainring
    Centaur BB
Bontrager Aeolus 5.0 Track wheel set
    Selle Italia SLR saddle

all other buts are a bit of a hodgepodge of buts from the parts bin

during the week, it has some cheap wheels, risers and a campag veloce brake up front.

cant do much better with the photo quality, due to lack of equipment, talent and patience so if you want to see it closer you'll have to catch me :p

look fantastic, wheel look quite strange with that frame, but nonetheless perfectly functional for track racing mind.

which is why we all wear mountain bike shoes.

    rubbish!

  • fred, surely you've noticed that I don't have clip, or even clipless when I went out with you, asm and pj back in 2008 and dealt with it pretty fine!

but on a serious note, the amount of control you get once you're strapped/clipped in is enormous.

  • yeah, but why would you even bother riding without clips of some kind, it takes a few attempts/falls to get used to it and that's it. no point delaying in inevitable is there.

  • Good job Ed.

i seem to remember you stacking it spectacularly!

we must do that again (the ride, not the crashing).

    this sunday eve?

  • Fred how's the BMC coming along ? Done yet?

  • nope - waiting for a rear hub from the states (Paul 130mm), and at the moment I'm assing around with brake levers (anyone got a pretty 22.2mm left lever for sale?) I reckon end of Jan.... :-O

  • Crikey, good luck with it. Looking forward to seeing that.

  • oh, and I got some sweet stickers from flickwg for the other side - so I'm going with stickers!

  • I've finally recieved my new saddle for my Storck...i've now removed the futuristic torture device otherwise known as my Hed aero lab v04 and replaced it with a pro carbon...both full carbon with ti rails....but the pro carbon is at least half an inch wider on each side from the mid section to the back and is shaped all over to support all the right areas....even just riding it up and down the flat the difference is amazing....it now supports my ass bones instead of my fleshy bits.
Plus it has nice glossy carbon too and only one tiny logo which matches the frame perfectly.

Avoid the hed lab saddle at all costs people...after 28 yrs of cycling, i thought my ass could handle any saddle...but it just shows how important shape is over padding.

Now all that's left are the long awaited photos...:)

  • preliminary picture of preliminary completion!

i'll post a better picture when i have had a ride lasting more than 2 minutes and tightened everything up.
    chains a bit noisey too!

  • I am completely lost for words!

  • Seb i'm BEGGING you......please stop buying so many bikes....save your money for a custom built lo-pro so you can have a decent sized head tube and a taller seat tube so your seatpost isn't longer than my seat TUBE! PLEASE!

  • the seat post is particularly bad as the paint stops it from going down as far as it should, still though is should get a custom lo pro, still not sure if it won't look like i out 650s on a normal lo pro

  • reminder me (very tenuously) of tynan's whip.

  • @edscoble Yeah, i know what you mean but i wanted something deepsection and tubular for the track and these came up on the bay for a bargain price (i paid £300 and have the original receipt for over £900) and i couldnt say no.

I think they look over the top with all the stickers on and i want to take most of them off really but i dont want to affect any future resale value, just in case we dont get along, so i'm leaving them on for now.

  • I think the wheels look great - a rare good combo of classic frame, modern wheels pulled off IMO! Hear you on the stickers though . .

  • Flick - those my old forks? Looking good

  • jesus! how do you plan to steer that??
