H Plus Son rims - are they any good?

  • You should be fine with a 36h front! That'd still flatten curbs :)

Still, I'm glad I've gone for Mavic/Campag for 2009s wheels.

  • Is it clear if this has happened once and been blogged about all over... or has actually happened on more than one occasion?

I've also been looking around for opinions and facts on these rims and have also only found these two references to failures.

  • the full story and some more pictures here: http://ganrin.blogspot.com/2008/11/its-not-mine-but.html

  • To be honest, Tsuzing has appered on the different blogs, and has only asked to be given time to investigate the failure.

Things fail on bikes; whether they be rims, saddle rails (Ti?), frames, seatposts, or whatever. Just because one thing fails, shouldn't mean that the line is defective. I respect the maker a lot for taking the time to interact with his customers, and also thereby try to improve his product.

I know the rim failure looks bad, and if I was on that and coming down a hill, I'd be typing this email from a cosy chair in Hell (they make a lovely pizza).

But seriously, couldn't this have been a case of over-inflated inner-tube? I don't know the max recommended psi on that rim, but it looks like it could have been exceeded, and by a large margin. Either that, or it cleared Quality Control, when it shouldn't have.

I'm sure they'll be much more talk about it, but at least we know that the manufacturer is really listening.

Oh yes, and Hippy's expertise in such matters does show, and I think he should be listened to:
***"It's obvious the rim exploded at the valve-stem drilling in the rim. What most likely occurred was that the rider made an error we all have at some point; he didn't properly nest the tube and tire within the hooks of the rim's cross-section. ***
What usually happens when you do that is your tube slips past the wire bead of the tire and forms a bubble. You can ride on it like this, but it will eventually explode. From my observation, it appears that the rim's inner wall was weaker than the tire bead and it took the released force the hardest resulting in the damage shown above."

  • Dude needs to get some shoes that actually fit too :-P

Massive shoes are the year after next's lo-pro.

  • H+Son's response

"....you dont even have to machine the sidewalls to lighten the rim.
the original formation face rim wasnt made for tricking in mind. they were designed for speed. And for road riding and normal curb jumping they are more than enough....."

I'm not convinced by this. If they where designed for speed I would of thought they'd have a lower spoke count rim and offer a tubular version. It seems like they've got a rim that's halfway between a racing one and a street one

  • somehow even thought their rims have problem I already have more respect toward them than Velocity.

how, they are thinner deeper rims, that people have said there are many troubles with. i've abosultely hammered my deep v's on my polo bike and they are still going strong.

i can't believe a rim could split down several spoke holes like that. maybe because the triangle profile is elongated unlike the equilateral(ish) profile of a normal rim it just isn't strong enough.
if it was double eyeleted i doubt it would have failed so spectacularly.

eyelet isn't the problem it was inner box section. you can't eyelet a deep v rim anyway ie cxp33

more chance of happening to 36H as there is less gap between the holes, esp at the valve.

    I don't think I said that. :S

Sorry, it wasn't totally clear I was quoting that blog below the text.

Fair enough. Apologies for the misquote my antipodean monster-calved fellow.

Still, I'm still curious as to how this happened though. I looking forward to reading about the theories and investigation results.

  • Its pretty simple, people are doing things on 700C road wheels that they were never designed to do - " I did a 3 stair drop barspin and my arrospok imploded" - well wtf do you expect?! Personally i think it was the overproliferation of HHSSPoke Cards in the wheel that led to this failure

  • hiiiiigh five!- as soon as i can get a clip of fellipe, the second best courier in new york, blindly leaping off ten steps and shattering a set of spinergys i'm going to clockwork orange a few hipsters

some wheels just weren't meant to do tricks on....

CXP33s have eyelets though, don't they? I'm sure the one I built was eyeleted. Do you mean you can't have a double eyelet on a deep rim?

  • Wheels look amazing! Can I ask a simpleton question about the front wheel spoke threading / formation, is there any strength issues with this particular wheel? Would love a front wheel laced like this...

Love my H+'s that dogsballs put together for me (which are super strong and stood the test of time, thanks dale!)

  • hah,I was the one who brought the last h plus son rims couple weeks ago.

not quite - I got one on Sunday..

  • proper taco'd rim ;-)

    Not in a traditional sense.

"profiled eyelets".. they are kind of embedded into the rim rather than hooking over the top.

    +1

VelocityDeeeepVeeeeees were adopted by street fixed riders precisely because they are heavy, stiff and chunky relative to roadie racing rims or skinny track tubs... and come in sillly colours! :P

I had no idea how little knowledge some fixed riders have about 700c wheels until reading some of the Orange County posts... fucking hell... !!!

    *fixed *

  • one exciting thing about H+sons is that when you reach a good speed they start to sing.
    which is nice.
found this out on my timed ride around the oxford ring road.

  • What does it sing?

    ...maybe...

    [Chorus]
Just let me give you real street shit,
to rap in yo' shit with
We clap yo' seat, we whyle this heat
Keep bouncin up and down these streets
    So nod yo' head and
    Break yo' neck nigga!
    Break yo' neck nigga!
    Break yo' neck nigga!
Bang yo' head until you start to
    Break yo' neck nigga!
    Break yo' neck nigga!
    Break yo' neck nigga!
    Break yo' neck!

  • The H+Son rims look good, but are they as strong as deep V's?
