  • Baise Moi, its got it all, drug use, gang rape, copious amounts of pointless violence, hardcore porn scenes, menstruation...
And il give Irreversible a 2nd vote, watching the rape scene was the 1st time i'd ever felt physically affected (sick) by a film.
Salo is alright but its a bit pointless, you keep thinking its gonna get good n there's gonna be some proper fucking etc but it never arrives.
Man Bites Dog is quite funny in places and mildly disturbing in others.
Delicassen and City of Lost Children are both really good. Very stylish and with good story lines.
Anatomy of Hell if your into hairy armpits and periods.

  • Le Trou
    Touchez pa aus Grisbi
    Bande a part
Or if you are a sci fi fan; Alphavilllllllee(as it is pronounced in franch)
1 more but it's Thai; Last Life in the Universe

  • @ cliveo
9 queens is an argentinian film

    @messenjah
"la familia rodante" is a great argentinian film
"cidade baixa" [lower city] is a nice brazilian film

  • Definitely 8 1/2 for the Italian one
and instead of telling you to watch Breathless by Goddard, try Alphaville, or for a really great great film by him, I highly, highly recommend Une Femme Est Une Femme (A Woman Is A Woman).

  • A Man Escaped by Robert Bresson
The Battle Of Algiers by Gilles Pontercorvo (sp?)
Les Cunts de Bordeaux by Andre L'Hippy

  • À Sout De Souffle - French New Wave - Jean Seberg

A **Bout **de Souffle - Had this DVD for a few weeks and not got round to watching it yet.

The B movie american version, breathless, with Richard Gere is a guilty pleasure of mine.

  • Zazie dans le Metro.(1960)

12 year old Zazie is dumped on her uncle by her mum who, as Z. is well aware, is going to spend the weekend with her lover. Uncle is a transsexual nightclub dancer, and Z. wants to know if he is 'hormosessual' (probably not, he has a very cool girlfriend). However her main interest is to go on the Metro, but of course it's 'en greve' (on strike). From a novel by Raymond Queneau written in almost impossible slang french. Not a film that could ever have been made in Hollywood.

  • Just noticed above my post *A Bout de Souffle *a.k.a. Breathless. This is a rubbish translation of the title. I prefer the more literal 'To the last Breath' . That's what it means, and that's what the film is about - just watch it and you'll see what I mean.

  • Can I be really anal and pooint Man Bites Dog is actually Flemmish. Credit where it's due, they do manage other things apart from beer and chocolates

I think Les Visiteurs is too

  • The Battle Of Algiers by Gilles Pontercorvo (sp?)

    +1

Flemish is a language spoken in Belgium. French is also spoken in Belgium.
Man Bites Dog is in French.
Les Visiteurs is a French film.

  • the french come up with some unsettling films. cache was excellent. i like irreversible as well.

another one that freaked me out, barracuda starring jean rochefort. played a lonely old dude obsessed with fred astair.

  • The beat that my heart skipped (or, De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté ) was great, and anything by almodovar especially the early ones.

  • This is wierd, I click on this thread... I'm listening to the soundtrack of A Bout De Souffle right now...

    I flippin LOVE that film.

What about those pair Manon des Sources and the other one? they're great.

    'Three colours' trilogy are amaaaaazing

And +1 to whoever mentioned 'Les Valseuses' ^, that's AWESOME.

  • A Man Escaped by Robert Bresson

    +1, brilliant film.

A French director who doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet is Jean-Pierre Melville.

I'd recommend Bob Le Flambeur; Le Doulous; Le Samouri; Le Circle Rouge.

These are all brilliant gangster/noir films - if you're tired of the typical American stuff, these rule. (I also reckon you should try and watch these on as big a screen as possible.)

Someone Italian who I don't think has come up yet: Visconti. Ossessione and Rocco And His Brothers are both gripping.

There's a ton of stuff out there.. if it's French and Italian you're particularly after, Artifical Eye and the BFI are probably the best distributors to look for.

I might post a few more up another time as to be honest it's just a joy even thinking about all the great films that have come out of France and Italy.

    it is, isn't it!

I also recommend "L'armee des Ombres" - Army of the Shadows I think is the English title. Superb (but slow).

  • some of rocco siffredi's work is quite impressive.

  • +1

The Godfather was good, too - that's I-talian.

    And Last Tango In Paris.

  • 3 of my favorite French films

    L'Homme Du Train
    Les Choristes
    Angel A

And one Spanish (I know it's not French or Italian)
    The Orphanage (El Orfanato)

I can give you DVDRips of Angel A & The Orphanage and I have DVD's of Les Choristes and L'Homme Du Train.

Check IMDB and PM me if you're interested in borrowing any of them.

  • Just saw this tonight at prince charles highly reccomended

    Hors de prix - (priceless)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482088/

  • En route au mosque - it's a bit heavy-going though. Needs translation as well...

  • nearly all the french films i've seen have been total mindfucks (i.e The Piano Teacher). Not necessarily bad, really nice to look at (cinematography) but just weird plots
