  • Thanks Bumpf, that was the one. Good but very unsettling (I'm thinking the bit in the Algerian's flat). Haven't seen 'Funny Games', will check it out.

MessenJah's not answered my question tho - why do they have to be French or Italian?

  • 'Funny Games' is more unsettling, in a protracted and non-direct way...

I saw another one of his (something about The Night Of The Wolf or something). It was very dark (as in unlit) and rather than an Algerian, it was a horse wot got it.

    • I've watched you so long (beautiful) - just out now
    • Switchblade Romance (amazing horror film, shocking)
    • Read my lips (outstanding performance by Vincent Cassel and Emmanuel Devos)
    • The mad adventures of Rabbi Jacob (see how mad French get at comedy)
    • Les Visiteurs - very funny (as mentioned by RPM)
    • Deadly Fanny Pack mentioned Harry is here to help (another very disturbing film to watch)
    • Pot luck
    • Russian Dolls
There is also a comedy "Le Velo" with Benoit Poelvoorde (Man Bites Dog) funny but not great. I think this is the best scene,

Oh and the tall Blond Man with a black shoe (if you liked the Diner de Cons this is the first in the serie of director Yves Robert). Lots of bike scenes. Very funny!

  • Irréversible - There's a couple of hard-to watch scenes (HTFU), but it's a good French film.

  • Doberman - fucking brutal french version of lock stock

  • and a bonus present, Les Bronzes font du ski. Watch the bit when they drink the shallot/garlic liqueur. Mention this to French people and they will be well impressed. A big classic.

  • The three colours trilogy
Anything by Jean Jenut (Amelie, City of Lost Children, Delicetessen)
    400 Blows
    L'Appartement
    The Piano Teacher
    Band of Outsiders
    Belle de Jour

  • Gazon Maudit, le Bonheur est dans les pres (with cameo from Eric Cantona), Tati Danielle.

    all funny.

  • 'Love Me If You Dare'

    Lovely little French film

  • Les Triplettes de Belleville -French cyling cartoon.
37°2 le matin (Betty Blue) - Beatrice Dalle when she was hot

MessenJah's not answered my question tho - why do they have to be French or Italian?

I didn't answer because I was in bed.

I just fancy a change from English or American films and have watched only a few of the French/Italian films in the library. I fancy renting some, it's something to do other than look at the same old websites on the cold wet evenings when there's nowt but shite on TV (which is every day) - but I'm not sure what to look for.

  • but I'm not sure what to look for.

    Subtitles?

  • À Bout De Souffle - French New Wave - Jean Seberg

  • Le Conseguenze dell'Amore (The Consequences of Love)

    and

L'Amico di Famiglia (The Family Friend)

Both directed by Paolo Sorrentino - excellent films the both of them

Great photography and soundtracks along with great stories - both on the outer edges of the Italian Mafia

  • See Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth.
Not exactly what you asked for but still a great movie with both a French and Italian episode.

  • Gomorrah

  • Jteme Paris, is an excellent collection of short films done by big directors. Based around love, the stories involve romance, tragedy and humour. With a few appearances from holywood stars.

Absolutley loved it, a good one to watch with a lady friend.

Try reading a book for a change.

Yes it is a very nice film. Sorry to correct the spelling, mais nobody will be able to find it otherwise. It is "Paris, je t'aime".

Don't stop with French or Italian. While there are many great films from those two countries, today it is possible to explore far further afield.

Denmark has made some of the best films of the past twenty years. The Dogma 95 movement and films like Italian for Beginners and Festen as well as more "conventional" films such as Babette's Feast".

Mexico, Spain, Chile (Nine Queens), Brazil (City of God, Central Station) and Argentina have all made some excellent stuff of late as have the Russians - Brother and Brother 2 (its sequel to name but two).

Sweden - My Life as a Dog.

    Lebanon - Caramel

I could go on but ought to be working....

  • +1 Cliveo

I will add a Danish film "After the Wedding" A MUST!

its good that you did, I couldnt actually remember the proper name myself. I watched in the cinema and have tried downloading it since, having the completely wrong name resulted in failure.

  • La Dolce Vita

  • Korean films are pretty much amazing too.

    Plus lots more countries.
