  • hey - did you buy it at Kalavinka? If not where?

I'm looking for a NJS bike here...

  • Kalavinka are worth a look. That is where the Bridgestone is from indeed. Really nice guys.

Cycle-Recycle Depot is worth a look if you have a car/ time (in Chiba- look for thread 'Japan')

Avoid Carnival- the BLB of tokyo- Over priced, shite.

Punch in Asakusa is excellent- but random hours.
    Its such a cool store.

  • yorgo, search for the thread called "Japan"
build made a whole list of places (with googlemaps!) to go in tokyo to look for stuff. i can't wait to go myself! good luck finding a frame!

  • hey guys. first off, im new to the whole fixed gear thing, but a good friend of mine is a courier, and ive been messing around on his bike for a while. Im now in Japan (Kobe), and looking for a bike to commute/ get around/ have fun/ something with limited maintance, and a fixie seems idea.

so basicly, i was wondering i anyone knew anywhere in Japan, especially Kobe, where i could buy parts to make a bike (or a cool shop that can do it for me, as i dont have any tools here).

im 6ft3 however, which im assuming is going to be rather a dissadvantage.

worth getting a frame in the US, and then the parts here? im guessing Shimano/Suigno parts will be cheaper here? the factories are only a bus ride away!

anyway, if anyone is feeling kind, and has the spare time to reply, then thanks alot.

  • thanks m8.

it will be a while before i make it up to Toyoko, i had read 2 of those in the hope of finding something closer.

anyone else able to help, i see a few of the people on here are living in Toyoko?

  • no one?

  • I'm going to be in Japan for a week and a half in early August. Am I likely to pick up a good value Japanese frameset in Tokyo or are the prices hiked up? I'm currently riding a Dawes frame with a 60cm Centre of BB to top of Seat tube way too big for my 5'7" with a 29" inside leg. Does 50cm for a man of my height sound right for a track specific frame. Many thanks for any suggestions.

  • Try a 52-54cm. I'm 5 8 and same inside leg and always convinced my 52 cm frame looks small for me but its very comfortable. Seatpost stem and saddle adjustments will sort you out around that size anyway.

  • Thanks adoubletap I guess slightly too small is better than too big.

  • Thanks adoubletap I guess slightly too small is better than too big.

Sort of but with track frames and tight clearances you might need to think about toe overlap and your crank length.

  • Cheers build, do you know if any of those shops have web sites I could look at in advance?

  • flying out to Japan tomorrow for some time with my little bro...if anyone is interested in getting me to pick up something small (am taking bike so weight and size issues) and Japan specific let me know. Will have to let me know today (PM me using this site) and I will see what I can do

    Cheers

    Gus

  • havent made it to Tokyo yet but theres a lot of track bike action here in Osaka. checked out the following place which was good

    http://njssupermarket.blogspot.com/ - http://njsframes.blogspot.com/

Rene who runs the place is ex Melbourne which makes communication a lot easier (lots of "interesting" experiences trying to get directions from locals over the last few days) but he can get hold of most NJS parts and has more than a few frames lying around.

  • where in Osaka are you? im in Kobe!

and how hard is it to find Rene's shop?

  • The NJSFrames place is in Minami Horie, opposite the North Face shop, near Horie Park. It is just west of America Mura, over the Yotsubashi Road. Hes on something like the 3rd floor, but there is a bike rack out the front so you can find it.

It is more an office than shop (most of the stuff he sells is overseas) but he is a more than friendly store and theres a track frame builder who shares the space (Anchor?)

will look to post pictures re location but is v much opposite North Face although the building is on a corner so it will be on one of the two sides.

picture of shop entrance can be found here

  • +1 for Japan, I was there a month ago. Here's my 2cents....

    • 1 for NJSFrames. Rene came and found me at the subway stop (10 mins ride from the bullet train station) as street signs are GOOD. He's about to open (or just has) a shop with the frame builder, Ocean.... 1st floor. No bargains though!

WBase in Tokyo + carnival upstair had a good range with some Tee19 goodies. Similar prices to Blue Lug, cheaper than here and shipping savings.

Kalavinka was off the beaten track and limited English but real cheap (e.g. ~£75 for Sugino 75 vs £105 elsewhere) for their components (limited stock though)... and their workshop was fun to see.

Take some NOS european stuff and do swapsies. I saw proper tongues-out over campag aero brakes!

  • I need some info about the place - if you've been can you help me out?

  • don't go, they do migit tossing, i fear for your safty

  • Yeah, but the average Japanese is shorter than me by about 5", so I'll be the one doing the tossing. Of Japanese men. Erm.

Anyway, I'm not going, need some info for Fixed mag,

  • Yes twice last year. What do you want to know?

  • Ah, good stuff - I'll PM you

  • I have been also. Due to the madness of Tokyo's street naming it was a total bitch to find.
