god! why didn't anyone ever tell me about tape???
for the first eight months of riding fixed, tubs were the bane of my existence! as well as stackbolts (from old TA cranks) that came loose every time i skip-stopped...
i spent more time trying to source parts and glue tubs on myself that i wound up building a beater just for riding around london and will save the other for the track

I am in two minds whether to get a tubular or clincher wheelset, the tubs pretty much always come out lighter (tyres and wheels) but I am a bit concerned that tubs would be a pain in the arse to use around ol' London town - by that I mean are they a nightmare if you puncture ?

Any input appreciated.

if you get a puncture your going to be well and truely screwed! its not a quick inner tube switch round...its a long walk home followed by as long trying to sort the whole thing out...clinchers

Can't imagine why you'd choose tubs for anything other than competition.

Even then you'd have to convince me that the final few tenths were down to tyre choice.

It's not like the old days when tasty rims were tub-only!

cincher. had a tub strip of the rim (riding back an ebay buy,v old glue), luckily at low speed, pain in the arse, as for punchers...i didnt get that far but the same out come as i had...long walk home

Not looking good for tubulars ! Anyone want to come to their defence ?

I rode with one on sunday, it was nice, very smooth, very hard. Good for perfectly smooth surfaces, like a velodrome. Not great for roads in LDN i think...

i would use tubulars if i were racing track or if i had a support vehicle behind me in a road race. for every day around-the-city riding tubulars will cause a big problem.

well how many people carry a spair inner tube in their MASSIVE messenger bags? surely a spair tub wouldn't take up that much room? you can get a tape as well as a glue to quick fix it when punctured.. then repair the other tub when you get home.

really high p.s.i's (less chance of puncture, with a good tyre?), lighter, faster.. don't run them myself, but i don't think they're all the trouble they're cracked up to be

If you're carrying around another tub then the weight saving goes out the window.

Someone does a tubular clencher, basically a tubular tyre so you save the weight, but it has two beads moulded into the rubber so fits a clencher wheel, no gluing. that would be your best solution IMHO if you want to try tubulars, if they prove to be too big a PITA you can go back to regular rubber.

I'll add a link to the tyre if I can find it in my history.

the weight saving is rotational so your wheel can spin up and slow down quicker and easier regardless of how much extra weight YOU are carrying.

screw tubs why would you ride tubs anyhoo more puncture proofing with clinchers easier to get on and off longer lasting cheaper

The Tufo tubular clinchers are ok, but I've never heard anyone say much thats positive about them.

And while you can carry a spare pre-glued tub around with you, what happens when you go through your spare? On the glass strewn streets of London, in the wet, its a risk not worth taking.

My vote is still no to tubs on the road.

I think I may steer clear of tubulars for the moment.

i think vittoria makes the tubular clincher tires - high thread count, light weight, can get up to a high psi. still, i would only ride them during a road race and not everyday urban use.

True! I like tubs as well but my vote is for clinchers - specially for winter time! Brrr!

Kilgore I think you may mean these .. Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX Folding Tyre .. they are a clincher that when filled to the max pressure of 145 psi feel very like a tubular

I think it depends on the bike
you are not going to fit up tubs on any old beater
however for my mercian build I wanted 1970's race rims to go with my 1970's campagnolo record hubs so it had to be tubs
this of course has the added bonus of that I get to ride with a 'tub-bag' hanging from my seat which is just uber-cool
its going to be long distance bike so I'll just have to practice changing tubs
but it is not like they didn't used to do it in the old days
of course they like nice on kerin cycles too
