  • Firstly, hello everyone - been lurking on here for a while but only just got round to registering.
Wondered if anyone had any experience of getting a bike with a lot of chrome resprayed? Is there any chance of it getting damaged in the process (can the oven baking part affect it?)? Would I mask the chrome off myself first?
I picked up this frame cheap

and I can't decide what to do with it - my present frame is fairly similar and I just left the paintwork as it was and didn't worry about it, but this frame seems to merit something better.
But then spending 3 times the price of the frame on a respray seems insane. Maybe I should just paint over the bald patches myself?
I don't know, be grateful for any opinions anyone might have.
    Cheers

  • Hi.
I masked this myself and then got it done at a car body shop. If you wanted proper (harder) bike paint I reckon you could mask and then get it done saving cash by masking yourself.

    Here is a photo-progress.

    Hope it helps.

  • That was quick.
    Looks really good.
Is standard masking tape good enough to mask with?
(This might be be a stupid question - I've realised I know absolutely nothing about painting)

  • jol your bike looks amazing! nice work.

  • although worn in parts i reckon the paint job now is amazing!

(but i do have bad taste)

  • The black lines behind the black text bother me...

JOl - what did you use to strip down your frame before the spray?
The more I look at your pictures the more a full respray appeals to me...

my god that is slick, love the chromed luggs. good shde of green same as my single speed town flyer.

    really lovely bike Jol.

  • Hey.
Glad you like it. Wish I had it here. :(

Is standard masking tape good enough to mask with?
Yeah, it's what I used even though they sell 'pro' stuff.

what did you use to strip down your frame before the spray?
Just normal paintstripper. tip - lay it on thick and let it cook.

    Spencer Street Station fatboyralph8.
Check http://www.fixed.org.au/ for secondhand parts. Good guys on there.

  • Cheers,
So I presume paintstripper doesn't hurt the chrome?
Is taking off the gear lever braze-ons difficult?

  • I believe you can dremmel them but I got them de-brazed by a frame builder for cheap.
And, no, chrome with stripper was fine.

  • JOL: I heard that they changed Spencer Street station's name to Southern Cross station or something?
I'm gonna be lost in my own home town when I return! :S

  • They did. I had an interview today and had to be directed. The person arranging the interview was like "go to Spencer Street station and then...." and I was like "what street station?"

I've always known it as Southern Cross - but then I've only been here since end of May.

  • Oh yeah, southern cross, my bad.
Miss melbourne when the weather is like this.

  • Same here dude. I might have nearly died of hypothermia in Melbourne.. but at least that only happens once or twice a year! :D

  • theyve only just finished the station last time i was there...quite impressive. there's always something new and big everytime i go back.

will check out that shop in melb. would u say, parts in oz are more expensive than here? couple of mates still orders stuff from uk online shops!

  • Ebay seems cheaper.
Also secondhand stuff. Got my frame for 200 bucks. Nitto bars 30 dollars.

  • Bitsa.. some things in Oz are more expensive some things are cheaper, e.g. old bikes and frames are easier to find and cheaper because people don't use them until they collapse like they do here - they just chuck them out and drive their car everywhere.
But, things like a Shimano groupset will be more expensive because the lone importer can charge bike shops whatever they want.. captive market and all..

There's more of a fixed scene over there now so my plans of buying up loads of cheap track bikes and flogging 'em to Hoxtonites, etc. is now flawed. Plan B..

I found it much easier to get bargains on AU ebay than the stupid UK one. Too many people here, stuck inside bidding on cold, wet nights...

  • btw seeing as this has become the official Melbourne thread. What's you fav Melbourne bike shop?

Mine has to be Melbourne Bikes in Clifton Hill - cause my mate works there and gives me stuff for free and never charges me for his work/time. Awesome. It's also a great shop and the staff are passionate about bikes.

It's pretty cold here in Melb today and has been for most of the last few months. Possibly colder than its been in England in Winter. Bitterly cold. A bunch of ppl have said its the coldest they'd ever known it to be. I should go back to Cairns.

  • I raced for Croydon Cycle Works. Mick's a legend!

I bought my PlanetX Zebdi off a guy who worked at Melbourne Bikes. Don't remember going to there shop except for an emergency spoke replacement for my MTB once.

My old coach works for Cycle Science on Maroondah Hwy so I'll pop in and see him if I ever make it back to Oz. I bought some touring kit off them before he started there. Good guys.

There's a shop in the city I quite liked too.. um.. Cecil Walker cycles, that's it. They have lots of older steel frames, quite helpful, etc.

There's BikeLife (I think) in Hawthorn/Camberwell. They were close to where I worked and the guys were always really helpful (like letting me raid their bin for freewheel spacers for my singlespeed project).

The shop near Richmond Stat. that stocks all the old stuff?? I never really went there but friends did and they loved it.

Bicycle Recycle is cool to browse for old bikes (well, duh!)

Yeah, my parents were complaining about the cold. I'd rather have a freezing winter and hot summer than a miserable 12 months though (yes, I'm talking to YOU London!)

  • Dan is the king when it comes to friendly knowledgeable fixed and ss stuff.

    http://www.shifterbikes.com/

And Hippy.....your plan was foiled by one Mr Andy White. fyxomatosis.com

  • Oh yeah, how could I forget Dan! My mate worked there (in the store - Malvern Cycles??) before I knew about shifterbikes.
I still have my LIVE WRONG wrist band from Dan not to mention the White Industries ENO hub sitting in a box at home somewhere..

Yeah, fyxamatosis also beat me to having hot chicks straddle my bike while I photograph them...

  • Heh heh.
Never saw the live wrong. Like it though.

melbourne bike shops is the tops, bought 3 bikes there over the years. had a really good mate from highschool work there.

  • Suppose I'm just venting, So bear with me. But, WTF!!!! I sent my bike out to be resprayed and it came back not looking anything like the colour that I had picked? I looked carefully at the colour swatches and made a specific choice (Cobalt blue) But it came back almost Navy blue! It's a really dark blue and doenst look anything like what I chose. Saying all of that, the dark blue isn't horrible but it's not what I paid a lot of money for. Complaining and trying to send back a respray just doesnt sound that easy or practical. I guess I'll just bend over and take this one :( Sigh Ah well.

  • well if you think oyu're gonna give up you might as well give the people a call to politely explain the matter...
