May not have been the best example, as I agree, most of Japan's demographic problems were caused by their own hostile immigration policies.
The main point however is that the UK as an english speaking, post colonial power is in an enviable position regarding people wanting to locate here.

Should have said Head of government.

Poor Gordon must have suffered quite the head injury. Competely forgot everything about his past and woke up thinking he was a Guardian columnist.

Chief of staff paid more than the boss? I guess she has to buy her own clothes and football tickets though.

The PM's pay really is not a lot. It's barely more than a bog standard GP. But you are personally responsible for the wellbeing of 70 million people.
Liz Truss earned £80k for a single speech on behalf of some thinktank.

The PM's salary is not news. It coming up now is surely an attempt to push the news cycle away from Starmer using his position to land himself (and his wife) a few freebies.

Senior civil servants are often paid more than the PM
Starmer's salary would have been higher as Director of Public Prosecutions than it is now

The "government of service, people first party second" stuff was only going to bite them at some point. I bet they expected it to take longer than it has. Still think the winter fuel thing has been communicated terribly. Like they are determined for it to continually look as bad as possible for some reason.

Many of the journalists reporting on the PM's salary are paid more than the PM.

Many of the people in this thread are paid more than the PM
It's obviously a high salary. But it's in no way representative of the work or responsibility involved. The notion that Starmer, Sunak, Johnson etc. are PM for some football tickets or a free suit is ridiculous
Plenty of serious discussion over industry lobbying or unwanted media influence over MPs, but this sort of tabloid fodder just serves to drown that out -

The story is not about the PM's salary. It is about widespread fury at an over-powerful advisor. These quotes from the BBC news article are spicy:
One source told the BBC: “It was suggested that she might want to go for a few thousand pounds less than the prime minister to avoid this very story. She declined.”
and
“It speaks to the dysfunctional way No10 is being run - no political judgement, an increasingly grand Sue who considers herself to be the Deputy Prime Minister, hence the salary and no other voice for the Prime Minister to hear as everything gets run through Sue,” one insider told the BBC.
and
One angry government insider branded Ms Gray's pay “the highest ever special adviser salary in the history of special advisers”.
and
When Ms Gray was hired as Starmer’s chief of staff in 2023 she was tasked with working on Labour’s preparations for government. Special advisers see the row over their salaries as a sign that the work was not carried out in enough detail. “If you ever see any evidence of our preparations for government, please let me know,” one adviser said.
The number ten political operation and wider group of spads don't usually collapse into civil war and disarray this quickly.

So Sue Gray is Labour's Dom Cummings? Driving your hostaged family around Barnard Castle to test if you can even see will be hard to top, but let's see what she's got.
