  • On that, what's a good in-line filter for LDN WTR > coffee water? Don't want to be fucking around adding minerals back in

  • Kinda similar resulting brews I'd say. I don't think SPB will give you "improved" coffee over a manual pourover / Clever / Aeropress. What it has given me, is the ability to pop the coffee on the night before so it's ready when I wake up (good when you have a small child to sort out in the mornings, or other stuff to do). But also, that bit of it - grind coffee, water in dispenser, grounds in filter, assemble, press button, go and do something else - is making my slightly chaotic home life easier even if I don't use the timer. This morning I made 900ml, pottered round the house getting ready for the gym, drank 1/3 of it, by the time I'd got home my partner has helped himself to a cup and now I'm drinking the remainder while I start work (and post this). I wouldn't have had time to do a pourover before logging on this morning really.

    Also, before the SPB I didn't have the ability to really make more than 2 cups at a time, so when we have guests I'd always spend about 30 fucking minutes making coffee for everyone. We have my parents here doing childcare one day a week and now I don't spend ages making drinks for everyone! It's just there in the pot!

    Downside: I am getting through beans really quickly :/

  • I’ve been using this for just over six months, onto my second filter cartridge now. So far so good. Feels incredibly golf club to have filter water on tap.

    I was using the peak water filters for a while but in the end the improvement in taste wasn't worth the the faff imo, just dealt with the destruction of my kettle. I'd be a bit more protective of a Moccamaster.

    Yeah, interested to see where the chat goes on this, we're in the process of buying a house and having a brand new kitchen fitted so probably should have sorted it then but they seem pretty straight forward to fit at any point.

  • Clever Dripper tastes better every time and it frustrates me.

  • All of this is my experience too, I'm taking a hit on perfection but making life easier.

    When I buy a really fancy coffee that I know deserves a better brew I'll brew it only in the CD

  • @NurseHolliday @plasticniki Okay thank you both for the feedback. I feel like I'll stick to CD for daily brews and Moccamaster which I already have for whenever we have guests. I do have the ability to do the timer trick with a smart plug with the Moccamaster but rarely feel the need for it

  • I’ve got a prefect little setup where I could easily have a small tap on the back wall of this niche to fill the MM, Arke and kettle. Just have to get around to doing it, and pick a filter from the million options online

    I would regularly use it to make a smaller batch using the cone filter basket when I was on my own. works great that way. particularly paired with the sage smart grinder pro as you just had to change the cup setting on the grinder to match how many cups of water you were putting in.

    no hard sell but I'd go down to £130 posted on mine listed a couple pages back as could really use the money at the moment if you were interested.

  • Haha yeah. Many don't like the ceramic V60s due to the long warm-up but putting it on top of the kettle brings it to temp quite reliably (patent pending)

  • You should try a Hario Switch. Been getting fantastic coffee out of it versus my V60.

  • I was always sceptical when that one was released. Isn't that just french press with extra steps?

  • If you put a paper filter in a French press and use a combination of immersion and percolation, sure.

    Honestly, totally worth it. The ease and consistency of getting an extremely good cup has been very worth the $20 extra it costs over a standard plastic v60.

  • Switch is the same as a clever Dripper I think, it's much much cleaner and quicker than a french press

  • Yep. My total brew time is 3 mins absolute tops. 4 mins if you include weighing and grinding coffee in a hand grinder.

  • Which burr set did you get?

  • My favourite Sunday brew is immersion method, cleaner and slower than a french press, by making cowboy coffee in a French press. No extra gadgets required.

    Grind for cafetière, add water, after 5 mins sink the floating grounds with a spoon, leave for 10 mins with lid on, don’t plunge, pour gently leaving the grounds in the bottom of the pot.

    Super smooth, rich and sweet.

  • Oh blimey, don’t know, just sharp ones! I don’t really follow all this stuff. Different grinders do make very very subtly different flavours but nothing tremendously better or worse than any other.

    Edit: the second one sounds more appealing to me. As soon as they start calling a component of a food processing machine iconic though I’m out!

    @dancing james I got the 200 as we only do V60 with light roasts 95% of the time. But it's been a really long time that I had proper medium/dark roast V60 (other than from my Timemore C2), so at this point I don't know if I would've liked the 189 better. As for light roasts and V60 I'm very certain the 200 is the way to go!

  • Cafelat people, I'm happy with everything in my technique now except pull time, which is the last pwrt. I don't have scales, I usually pull the shot until the arms are an inch or so from the legs, but now I'm worried I might be over extracting.

    What are people doing here? Just time?

  • I watch until the ‘thickness’ of the coffee is too weak. It sounds like your are over extracting but it’s personal preference really

  • Hoff's kid is friends with my kid. Anyone dare me to invite him over for coffee and serve him Nescafé?
