But actually Idk if garden room style buildings strictly fit

  • Hmmm, I think I'd feel a bit less nervous if it had some proper padding! It's a brand new laptop and it belongs to my new work so I reeeaallly don't want to smash it up, haha.

  • Previous employer would let us expense a https://carradice.co.uk/products/bike-bureau-pannier for carrying a laptop.

I just used a normal pannier and a cheap neoprene sleeve from eBay. My thinking was:

    • Modern laptops are very strong
    • I wasn't concerned about cosmetic damage, laptops will pick up that over time anyway
    • They get bumped around just as much in backpacks/rucksacks
    • Any serious damage is going to affect me far more than the laptop so it is the least of my worries

(The next best improvement I made was getting a desktop for the office and having things setup so I could do all of my work from my desktop or my laptop. Just took a bit of discipline putting things on shared drives/etc rather than storing locally. This meant my laptop could just stay at home. Also when I was in the office I wasn't one of the twats sitting in a meeting on their laptop the entire time.)

  • I'd just use a sleeve to protect it from scuffs. Laptops are pretty tough.

  • Thanks everyone! Sounds like I'm probably overthinking it.

If I remember correctly there was a lot of talk on the subject of garden offices in the general gardening thread during / after covid, although I can't seem to find the relevant post now, could try asking in there as well @snoops

  • Anna Hughes's Eat Sleep Cycle is her version of the same from around the same time iirc.

  • Worth noting that if you’re using a laptop with a hard drive vs an SSD, you can damage the disc by jolting it around when it’s in sleep mode. Ask me how I know…

  • I have absolutely no idea which mine has. Will check before I wreck it!

  • If the former, just ensure it’s turned off and not asleep when it will be exposed to bumps and shocks.

  • If it’s a new laptop then it’s an SSD.

Spinning discs in laptops haven’t really been a thing for ~10yrs

  • Not quite as long as that. My 2020 MacBook Air has a spinny disc. It was the last of them thobut.

  • Definitely an Air? Even my 2014 Air had an SSD, and I'm fairly sure that was base spec.

  • Yeah air are SSD.

  • Anyone broken a hand/metacarpal? How long did it take to heal?

Any tips to get back on the bike as quickly as possible?

  • I think I'm mixing up having a spinny disk with having a fan.
A different sort of spinny disk.

  • I want to buy a snorkel and mask for me and my 5yo. Still not 100% about getting the snorkel for the kid. We're hopefully going on holiday in the Adriatic Sea so I think it would be cool now they're bigger. Obvs won't be "proper" snorkelling and not getting flippers or anything.

    What should I buy?

I don't want to spend loads, but having used decent rental snorkelling kit and shit stuff in the past I'd like it to work and not fog up, etc.

    Any pointers appreciated.

    Cheers

  • My wife and I got quite into snorkelling around the UK when we were allowed some UK travel during lockdown. We just bought the decathlon offerings and never particularly felt under-equipped.

  • The decathlon stuff is perfectly good for kids.

    https://www.decathlon.co.uk/sports/snorkelling/snorkel-sets

The Subea one with the wide nylon strap is good for comfort.

Snorkelling with my kids in the sea in Lanzarote was just brilliant.

  • I think I'm mixing up having a spinny disk with having a fan.

For what it's worth, those MacBook Airs also do not have a fan (since 2020 at least) 🙂

  • Although I bought mine in March of 2020, when I check the 'About this Mac' bit it says 2019.

  • Anyone use downham leisure centre / met parking places in Lewisham?
how do you appeal charges from them?

There’s an issue with dropping off swimmers and being charged. And also parking when the centre is closed but having to wait for kids.

How do you beat / appeal these?

  • Is it a council or private PCN? If it's private you're probably better off just paying it unfortunately. I used to deal with all the PCNs at my old job and never managed to successfully appeal one from a private company, they're ruthless!
