  • Is that him counting the picks he threw and still won?

  • Also. Zeke went back to the Cowboys.

That was the Cowboys signing the Patriots leading receiver from last year.

That is not a joke. Elliot caught the most passes last year for the Patriots.

  • Oh it’s not on Winston. I fucking love that guy and want him around me personally at work or any task that requires effort.

It’s the browns that confuse me…

Watson is back next season, well he is how he is may differ, and I can’t see how him and Watson mesh at all. Just chalk and cheese.

  • Yeah but shitty Bill is on McAfee now. Whole new patriots next year, or 7 years after two failed rebuilds.

*that’s a joke, Bill is goat.

  • Bomani jones has a theory that you can’t have a white qb backing up a black one, that the calls from the fans to bench a black qb when their play dips will get too loud. And with the browns and the contract they’ve given Watson they can’t allow that to happen, if they’d brought back flacco to be in that qb room after the season he had, Watson would have been under pressure from the jump!
I haven’t gone through every roster but the ravens spring to mind when they used to run the Lamar Jackson and Tyler Hundley (sp?!) combo.
Think this theory will be put to the test over the coming seasons with the amount of young black qb’s coming into the league..

  • When Dalton was QB for the Saints the whole fan base was crying out for Jameis to get back on the field, broken back and all. I really like Jameis but he can’t seem to help himself going big under pressure and gets intercepted as a result.

  • Interesting. I think though beside a few loud assholes, when it comes to football most are more interested in winning than racism.

Booing to be benched would be more because fans are fickle and there’s no greater player than a back up during a loss.

Maybe naive but I enjoy naive bliss.

  • I’ve been rooting for black qbs since the days of Warren moon, I can’t be naive with this, the leagues entrenched view that black qb’s aren’t smart enough to play the position, still runs deep. And now that the qb position is as much about a players athleticism, as well as arm strength, accuracy and ability to read defenses and process information, white qbs are having to take on board elements of play that used to be just “black” running qb things the waters only going to get murkier, and the “intelligence or not” of a player is going to bob back to the surface once again, despite what mahomes, Jackson, stroud, Wilson, Murray and others are doing..

  • Yeah but Jackson is a running back…

I joke obviously. But I’d honestly say Lamar is the only one I hear this of.

  • This really echos RG3s interview with Rich Eisen pre draft? Starting at 3:40, he says a very similar thing. How the vast majority of QBs extend the pocket, run, put themselves at harms way entering the modern NFL, but somehow he was only compared to Daniels because they are both black.

For all the ways in which the league is morally bereft, and racist (although I think my underlying belief is that it is so as a microcosm of America, if not western society as a whole, as opposed to necessarily racism off it’s own back) it has proven time and time again that it is willing to sacrifice almost any principles it holds on the altar of success.

    I’m not sure that:

Bomani jones has a theory that you can’t have a white qb backing up a black one, that the calls from the fans to bench a black qb when their play dips will get too loud.

    and

the leagues entrenched view that black QBs aren’t smart enough to play the position, still runs deep.

are the same thing, and I think you’re close with the latter than Bomani is with the former.

  • And with the browns and the contract they’ve given Watson they can’t allow that to happen, if they’d brought back flacco to be in that qb room after the season he had, Watson would have been under pressure from the jump!

The pressure on Watson has everything to do with his contract, irrespective of the quality of his backup.

"This guys play does not warrant that amount of money" is something the fans are very, very quick to judge.

  • Bomani jones has a theory that you can’t have a white qb backing up a black one, that the calls from the fans to bench a black qb when their play dips will get too loud.

Not sure I agree with that, but I am not saying he is wrong. I am going to ruminate on that this season.

  • Yeah it does, but having flacco there in that qb room, the fan pressure to play flacco instead of Watson, would have been unbearable for that coaching staff.

  • He and Dominique foxworth also have the theory that there are plenty of good white db’s/cb’s who can play that position in the nfl, but it’s their coaches who turn them into safeties/nickel backs??? Rather than letting them earn their stripes out wide 1v1.
Will be interesting to see what happens with cooper deJean and the eagles, and whether his versatility counts against him in terms of fangio using him all over the place rather than as a cb.

  • I definitely blame the coaches. It may have changed a little from the way I remember it, but usually the best athletes end up away from the QB at the lower levels of the game.

Why? Simply because they can contribute more more impactful positions (WR/RB and LB/S) against lower competition. You can get away with a less athletic passer at high school (and below) if your best athletes are torching people out wide or running the ball.

Why would you put the guy who is good for 100+ yard receiving a 1-2TDs a game as a QB under center?

The fast white guys all end up as wide receivers for the same reason. We are well past the days of guys who play both ways so they are rarely asked to play defense at the lower levels so they don't get the breadth of skills.

So by the time they get to college the good black athletes never have much, if any, exposure to the QB role. The fast white guys only know how to run routes, and the bigger ones end up at tight end. The CB room is full of ex-wide receivers who have the athleticism and versatility to play at corner or safety so the fast white guys don't get a look in. They are often shorter too.

Side note: Speaking of fast white guys - Christian McCaffrey's youngest brother Luke (4.46s 40) was just drafted in the 3rd round as a WR out of Rice University (my parent's alma mater) to play for the Commanders. He should be fun to watch out for.

  • He's a big game hunter, wants to win the game in one play but takes risky decisions

  • Tbf the pressure on Watson might also be the numerous counts of sexual abuse he was accused of and subsequently settled with out of court.

the Browns throwing 200mil plus at him is increasingly looking like the worst contract of all time, it even make Russell Wilsons contract look okay...

  • Do you mean lower quality or younger age?

I think that take is way off in 2024 money. A quick look at this year's HS recruiting class suggests pretty balanced (with the caveat that I haven't counted just scrolled), and I'd hazard that the real superstar athletes end up at QB as it is a no brainer at HS level to put the ball in your best players hands every play. Look at the number of ex QBs who play other positions in college/pro as opposed to the converse.

If you mean lower tier in quality - it shouldn't move the needle as those aren't the guys making it to the league.

  • Lower levels as in lower tiers - pee-wee, Jr High and High School.

Not everyone plays at big high schools so to even get attention from college scouts they have to do what they can to garner stats. Guys have to be versatile to make teams and get scholarships. You can't do that if you don't play. To get playing time and to be on the team, you play where you are asked to play.

That translates to college level too. "We know you played QB but do you want to come to Big School to play defense on a scholarship?"

  • Tbf the pressure on Watson might also be the numerous counts of sexual abuse he was accused of and subsequently settled with out of court.

the Browns throwing 200mil plus at him is increasingly looking like the worst contract of all time

The answer is d) All of the above
