Yeah I have the lace version not been too bad.

Those wheels went well in the end..

Doesn't look line the frame is suspension corrected though?

I accuse the brake hose zip tie, in the bottom bracket, of the murder of the axle.

Is it dead though? Or just marred?
-
• #30407
I don’t know- beyond my knowledge truthfully.
Circumferential grooves in the surface of the axle suggest that it might be more likely to crack under load where said grooves are- but will it? No idea.
-
• #30408
And without it, would the hose have chopped through the axle like happened to Josh ibbett on a tcr some years back? (I think)
-
• #30409
Quite possibly- hence why there is a zip tie to keep the hose away from the axle I imagine.
-
• #30410
No. Those axles are quite think, it's no issue.

Good reason to keep brake lines outside frame. I also like BBs with sleeves but they can cause issues too - I have a Rotor axle that looks similar due to Di2 cables or something pushing the sleeve onto the axle. I rode across a few continents on it though so it was structural enough to cause issues.

I will probably re-assemble with the addition of a Scherrit approved yoghurt pot cable/axle separator.

I haven't tried the terra speed so not particularly much help but I do have the terra trail which are remarkably similar tyres. The knob pattern is the same but ever so slightly taller so they will have a bit more grip and a little more rolling resistance but with that said, over the late winter when it was too wet to ride in the slop, I was using them for 50k road rides only and they didn't feel slow at all. Only a few kmh down on my road bike.

3mm clearance in this country is bold, given that there's only about 4 days each year when it's dry enough to not have a frame filled with shit.

UK Grav Grav Pro Choice = MTB with 33mm CX mud tyres fitted

Along with no chain and full-length waders.

So you can't accuse it of murder then. Just aggravated assault.
-
• #30419
The terra speeds I had rode nice but wore out super super fast. Won't buy again.

Thanks all. Yes good point about clearance too @hippy. I'm trying to go as wide as I can, but with enough room for some mud clogging. Shamefully, I pretty much only ride gravel on drier, warmer days now and mix in a lot of road. If conditions are terrible than I rather ride my trail bike.
Re: Speed vs Trail @PhilDAS that's actually helpful as I wasn't too sure what the difference was. I'm also assuming that taller knobs should last longer (in light of @pascalo 's exp), so will look at these too.
-
• #30421
They're like 50g heavier, I guess because of the bigger knobs but weight on gravel bikes isn't really the main concern. Anyway, they ride nice, I've been impressed but only had them a couple months

There's no shame in this. Riding in slop just ruins bikes and tracks.

Terra speeds are great. Fastest gravel tyres I’ve ridden (vs WTB Resolute, Gravel H, Gravel M, Mezcal, Wets).
Probably last you a summer. You should be changing for winter anyway, and something else will tickle your fancy the following summer. Seems fine.

Indeed. BRR suspects that it's a different Black Chilli compound than the Speed's too, based on their slightly surprising results, saying the knob height difference doesn't suffice as the sole reason for having higher rolling resistance. These are the tyres right? https://www.merlincycles.com/continental-terra-trail-performance-tr-folding-gravel-tyre-700c-226802.html
I'm looking for Tubeless and I'm assuming TR does mean they are, but nowhere in the description does it explicitly state this is the case.

TR is tubeless ready, yep.
Yeah its probably those. They're black chilli, I didn't think there were variations but who knows
wont be white for long! sfab
