  • Gaggia Classic and Sage Smart Grinder Pro would be my recommendation. That’s what I’ve got and it allows me to flit between espresso drinks, pourover and Aeropress. You don’t need Gagguino, I’d learn on the machine first and get that nailed first.

The only issue you might find is espresso machines like the Classic which have a water tank don’t like sitting around all week waiting for you to use them. You’ll want to empty it out after the weekend and you’ll probably have to descale it a bit more regularly.

  • It might seem counter intuative but a lever machine might be better for irregular use. Being able to start at low pressure is a lot more forgiving especially when guessing grind size after not making an espresso for a few days. You can get plenty of second hand flairs/robots for 2-300 which leaves a lot more budget for a proper grinder, which is arguably more important

  • What do you do for milk steaming with a manual machine though?

  • As someone who's got a Gaggia Classic and a hand grinder, this makes sense.

I'd only get electric if you think there'll be lots of long dial-in sessions.

  • @Pantsmaster another Classic + hand grinder (JX Pro) user here, great combination.

Having said that, my DF54 is shipping this week and looking forward to the ease of electric especially now we are brewing from different beans at home. It’s currently available without waiting list and could actually make a great compact solution to grinding for espresso and any other brewing method

  • When you’re out of Yirgacheffe but still want that caffeinated limeade hit.

  • Took the plunge on the Made By Knock feld grinder.

  • I'm looking to move on a eureka mingnon and sage smart grinder pro and pick up a DF64 v2.

Has anyone got a DF64? do you like it?

In terms of stuff for sale.

Thinking of £90 for the sage and £140 for the mingnon, drop me a line if interested.

I also have a rancilio silva v2 that needs the element replacing which I would let go for like 100. It has the more up to date steam wand and I can throw in a porta filter.

  • Coffee with a view. Beans by Clifton, not bad for a seaside coffee place.

  • I'm going to try with a Grapefruit and a Melitta paper later in the week. Got some coriander to garnish. Lacking in fancy glassware and fruit-filter cradle though

  • Jeez. Mignon and a Silva for £240 is daft money, even with it needing a repair.

    Bargain for someone!

  • Dark Arts Coffee sub cancelled, James Gourmet Coffee sub started, I've been influenced

  • I'll put a sales thread together once i've figured out what grinder is going to replace the eureka and sage.

  • what did you get to replace the Silvia?

  • Gotta say I've been super impressed with James Gourmet. @JB I should've listened to your dad a long time ago!

  • A second hand rocket appartamento. It's a big improvement. But I would probably go dual boiler as you end up purging so much steam / water to switch between milk and shots with what rocket call their heat changer single boiler.

  • I got sucked in by another Dark Arts sale, but I do intend to check out the james gourmet hype.

  • Ok - you're on a similar journey to me. So thanks, useful intel.

  • Lol! And me! I told him about it in the first place. They're so good. Still can't get over that pricing. Their brew guides are really good too.

I think I have finally found a decent cost to quality ratio specialty roaster over here - Metric in Chicago - and its still nowhere near as cheap as JG. 33.40GBP for 900g of coffee....

  • I am doing the James G thing too, a kg is en route. I mentioned what I liked, they came back immediately with some options, all is good.

  • I’m on the James Gourmet as well thanks to the recommendations. From the first two kilos it definitely lives up to the hype. Among the best espresso I’ve had an especially when considering the price these two……Uganda Rwenzori Natural One Roast -
    Peruvian Finca Aladinos One

  • I missed out on Nvidia, Tesla and Bitcoin. Maybe I should jump on the James Gourmet bandwagon.
    To the moon 🚀

  • What's the forum recommended hand grinder to upgrade my office's Porlex mini? Don't want to stretch to a Commandante or anything like that but would like something nicer to use and quicker maybe than the Porlex where the connection between handle and top is started to be rounded
