The US legal system is fucked in many ways but their tree laws are usually good, depending on specific jurisdictions.
Some states have mandatory treble punitive damages for felling or damaging a tree without authorisation, on top of returning any profit illegally acquired.
Relevant meme.

A local, wealthy landlord type cut down his neighbours TPO oak tree, which would have been significantly older than the tree in question got a £3k fine.
-

Unfortunately fines are generally permission slips for the rich.
-

This is a relatively good result – a (clarification: suspected) neighbour cut down my parents' TPO tree and my dad got the fine. Other trees on the land have been poisoned and the police are stumped (hah) as to who did it, because it certainly wouldn't be the former-council bigwig in the overlooking property next door.
-

Huh?
They expected your parents to permanently chain themselves to the tree?
AFAIK a pto means any work on the tree needs permission, not that the tree must be protected at all times.

Really surprising given the professionalism of the job. As said above, it's a clean cut, you can see the spray marks so would seem like someone in 'the trade' to me. 16 yr old kid seems odd.

Can't you just count the rings?

Not from this distance.

King John reigned from 1199 to 1216 and there’s film footage of it from that time so surely the tree is over 800 years old.
