Thanks :) it was oat milk I tried it with last time and wasn’t impressed. But maybe one of the barista editions rather than standard?
Yeah Xantham gum would need some experimentation. I’m mainly aiming for less “milk sorbet” and more “ice cream” in texture, as the previous batches whilst tasty didn’t have that satisfying mouth feel I find one gets from dairy ice cream

Having watched it for shits and giggles many times, finally made Vegan Black Metal Chef's pad Thai last night. It was really good.

https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jul/07/one-in-three-uk-vegan-products-found-contain-milk-egg
But there is currently no legal definition for vegan food, allowing firms to market their products as being so even if they contain dairy or egg.
Ex-fucking-scuse me? Did anybody know this?

Definitely not great from an allergy stand point. Is this not covered by "may contain traces of"? Ie, made on the same production line as products containing dairy etc.
-
• #10157
Nope, not good news :(
-
• #10158
I recently got ill from a salad from m&S that was supposedly vegan. I am allergic to dairy, go figure.

I'd guess a lot of the 'accidentally vegan' stuff and anything that may contain traces of because of cross contamination through shared machinery may contain traces of it. I'm not too fussed but can see why people might be. There's also bound to be traces of insects and whatever else in flour and all sorts. I think you could only be sure if it's marked as actually free from for people with allergies. Even if you start just eating apples you pick some of those may contain half a worm. I'd kinda hope the stuff with that vegan mark have any traces at a very, very low possiblity.

I'm not too bothered with the fact that you might get some trace of milk powder from a machine used for a couple of things, and accept that there are laws that mean you're allowed a tolerance half a fly in each pot of jam. That's risk-accepted. What's rustled my jimmies is that (if I'm interpreting that article correctly) companies can knowingly and deliberately market products with non-vegan ingredients (not accidental foreign bodies) as vegan and it's not illegal.
-
• #10161
Yeah, that can get to fuck, I read it as they know there's likely a degree of contamination but still labelling it vegan, just leaving off ingredients isn't right though.

Anywhere nice to eat near Salford Central in Manchester?
-
• #10163
What kinda vibes? There's not much right there but it's very close to loads of stuff around Deansgate etc. I'd grab a gofalafal as I've not had one in ages but I'm sure there's sit down stuff too.

The red velvet cake at Wulf & Lamb is super delicious

Picked up the vegan cathedral city. It's very crumbly and creamy. More like a Wensleydale. Haven't tried melting it yet.
-
• #10167
It melts much better than most supermarket cheeses. It doesn't look like it's melted, but it's deceptive; I find it's best if you melt it then spread it around a bit
-
• #10168
Still does the weird sticking to the roof of your mouth thing that most vegan cheese does, but it's the best I've had so far.
-
• #10169
Have had some really great vegan cheese but unfortunately not a single one has come from a supermarket, tried the cathedral city but won't bother getting more.
-
• #10170
Best I've had is the stuff from Palace Culture but it's pricey and even then it all has the same mushy texture.
-
• #10171
I am once again recommending Nettle Foods Haverstock White. It's pricey as fuck, so use it in moderation, but lasts in the fridge and is everything you want. They're at a bunch of south London markets on the weekends.

Bit of a long shot but any recommendations for Toronto?
-
• #10173
Another long shot! I don't suppose anyone has a slightly older, broken in pair of the vegan doc marten shoes in a size 8 that they'd want to swap for a more or less brand new pair?
My old pair were extremely comfortable, even out of the box. Between breaking those in and eventually wearing them out, I broke my foot and it's now a completely different (much worse) shape. The new foot shape doesn't get on with the really stiff sole of the brand new pair. -

My vegan docs are still not broken in after having them for about 3 years. Instablister every time I try to wear them again lol

I don't really get blisters if I wear thicker socks, my janky foot just gets insanely sore because of the stiff soles. Same reason that I have to wear shit, floppy cycling shoes!
These are also really good. I recently had bloodwork done and all my levels were optimum! Really impressed and the tablets aren't too big and don't taste like a foot.
