  • Bit of a long shot but any recommendations for Toronto?

Sorry I didn't see this, was busy getting packed for Toronto. Rec's coming.

  • Haha, I just got back. Barely ate out at all in the end! Had a really good brunch at a place called Evviva though. Very Instagram/influencer feel but good food!

  • Any suggestions for somewhere fun for a casual, low key anniversary date night tomorrow night? Either south east or central ideally. Not mega fancy because we're pretty skint atm.

  • Mallow is fancy enough for an anniversary but not too fancy.

  • Peachy Goat in Herne Hill would be a lower key option than Mallow.

  • Sliced up some king oyster mushrooms the other day, fried them in a teaspoon of sunflower oil, salt, pepper and a bit of Caesar dressing. It came out incredible. Taste and bite was like pork. Any other mushroom tips?

  • Good suggestion, never even heard of it before! Borough is a bit of a fucker to get to us though (used to be a direct train from ours to London Bridge but that disappeared last year) and I'm absolutely not going to Canary Wharf.

@dumps that might be a winner actually, been meaning to go for a while and Herne Hill is super easy for us. Shame Canopy closed down for a pre/post dinner pint.

  • Yeah, I didn't realise that in Germany it's common for food to be labelled labelled vegetarian even if it uses meat stock or rennet containing cheeses.

  • Real shame. 400 Rabbits at the Lido also has decent vegan pizza options as well as serving your craft beer needs.

  • Went to Tofu Vegan in Spitalfields for an anniversary/birthday date night. Quite pricey but really good! Quite a big menu but everything we had was amazing. Will definitely be back for another special occasion.

  • Yeah it’s awesome

  • Any recent Paris recommendations?

  • Not specific but make sure you check the ingredients for everything that would normally be vegan. Those french guys seem to fucking love making stuff not vegan, eg, cream in hummus.

  • More helpfully, I'll ask some vegan friends in Paris and get back to you.

  • Thanks, I'll turn my ingredient scanner up and wait on the friends.

  • There you go! Still waiting to hear back from someone else.

  • Nice, cheers, glad your friend is doing well too.

  • Just needs to learn how to spell Leytonstone and he'll be in business.

  • Worcesterstone.

  • I used to always be able to get by in France by saying (in French), 'Oh, this menu all looks so lovely, but the doctor won't let me eat any meat or dairy due to this colon condition'. They'd be overwhelmed with sympathy and you's always end up with something half-decent. Certainly a lot better than going in saying, 'I'm ideologically opposed to your way of life, now cater to my demands'.

Don't know how successful it would be now - they're probably wise to sneaky vegans by now...

  • I've been visiting France for many years now, and honestly it seems like just in the last 18 months they've started to get a lot more vegan friendly. Végétalien is the word for vegan, but a lot of products and meals were just labelled "vegan" when I was last there in May.

I'm afraid I don't have specific recommendations for Paris, but just thought I'd share the above.

  • Depends where you go I guess, i found the options super limited and one place was kind enough to offer fish or chicken when I said I didn’t eat meat 🥲. Went this summer too.

  • My Paris experience recently:
Rue Cail has bunch of thali options, quick, cheap for Paris.
Bodhi vegan has a big menu everything I had was ok, and the takeaway comes in very robust packaging for transporting by bike.
Wild and the Moon franchise for good fresh healthy stuff but expensive.
Great falaffel at Mi Va Mi, which is opposite the og place across the street to L' As du Falaffel.
And for emergencies Dominos has two vegan options.
Supermarket soft fruit is excellent everywhere. Peaches and nectarines especially.

  • Not vegan but all the big supermarkets have Bio (organic) aisles - loads more organic stuff than you'd ever find in the UK and all helpfully grouped into one space. You might find more vegan stuff there than in the other aisles.

  • ^ this is definitely true in Spain, the Bio bit is where all the fancy pants vegan stuff goes
