Mate building the bike suggested going all black on the tyres rather than tan wall - seems like a good shout to balance with the black cockpit as it looks unlikely that I’ll be able to strip the SRAM levers. Spoken to another owner and they reckon they can run 35c and still fit guards, so as much as I want to max out the tyre size for sikkkk aesthetics, 35c is probably a better shout.
And funny how similar that build looks to my original beater!

Good news about the healing and job, not so great about the cold.
Bike is going to look lovely with those wheels.
Paul and Phil, superb. -

Watching with interest! Have just built one of these up, thought I’d share a pic so you can see what tanwalls look like on it - these are 38 Gravelking SKs (I like them but puncture prone, tubeless seems to have solved).
Very random component mix as transferred from another frame. I think silver is the way to go with the mint frame.
Enjoy the build!

Looks great. Reckon my wheels will look very similar! I’m almost having pangs of regret ordering 35c but it doesn’t look like you’d get guards on with those 38c. What do you reckon?
Had to search around to even find 35c GK slicks in black. -

Nah don’t think you’d fit guards on with 38s, clearance is pretty tight, particularly around the seatstay bridge at the back.

Absolutely buzzing with the results. Finished with a green sanding pad for a brushed look. Glad I decided to go with them and strip.
Nb: oven cleaner is some serious shit!

They look great. Love the brushed finish but maybe think about polished mounting hardware to tie in with the other polished silver bits.

Yeah the hardware is all silver so other than a wipe clean it'll be left as is and be relatively shiny. I've never stripped anything like this so I was worried they'd come out looking blotchy or rough and that I'd have to polish them, but a bit of directional sanding with the abrasive pad did the trick nicely.

Those were black anodized? Only with oven cleaner? Great result. I use oven cleaner to clean router bits or saw blades from resin.

Yeah I used the stuff that comes in a bottle, it’s quite thick, akin to paint stripper (oven pride or oven brite, can’t remember which). Not sure I’d be comfortable doing it on anything that wasn’t substantial. Didn’t need to be in there long at all! Glad @gbj_tester advised me to not try and do rims with this technique, lol.

They turned out rather lovely, gentle coat of some sort of oil, for a little protection?

Or just wipe em over with gt85 every now n then.

Yeah I was wondering about that. They’ll just oxidise and go a bit chalky otherwise I guess. Will probably autosol them, or maybe look for something aluminium specific depending on how specific I’m feeling, lol.
Did those pads ever show up?

Not delved into the depths of the shed yet, that's tomorrow afternoon's task.

Ah wicked. Good luck on the expedition!

Couple of puffs of clearcoat to keep the finish from oxidising?
