  • Hot Huel just comes in a big bag, right? So if 400cal isn't going to do it for me then could I make a 7 portion bag into 5 slightly bigger portions, for instance?

  • Yeah exactly. 400cal is two scoops. After a ride or something I'll sometimes have 3 scoops for 600cal for example

  • Just used your referral code, thanks!

  • Nice one, thanks!

  • Just ordered two bags of huel black. Realised that if I’m on a liquid diet for a few weeks I can’t just live off chocolate milk.
Tbh I could see myself using it a lot more. Deffo better than eating shit when you’re short on time or energy.

  • This has been the big use case for me, and saves money. If I’m having a shit day I’m easily tempted to splash out on lunch. Also helping keep away from indulging in meat as I move to a fully vegan diet.

Buying some of the meal stuff. I’ve tried Mac n cheese (did not like) and Mexican chili (did like). What else is good?

  • I've been having Spaghetti Carbonara for lunch mostly every weekday for a few months (with a little soy sauce on top). That or a thai green curry/pasta bolognese 50/50 mix. Yes it works!

Didn't like mexican chilli at all, found the chilli flavour too harsh.

  • Carbonara with soy sauce?? Madman

Out of bolognese and green curry which so you prefer? I ended up doing chili mixes with Mac n cheese to finish it off too.

  • I prefer green curry but mixed together 50/50 they taste better! As I put this in words I'm pretty weirded out by what my huel habits have become.

  • Bolognese is better imo, a more dependable texture due to it being pasta based.

The Green curry and Mexican chilli I find is a bit grainy.

The chicken and mushroom pasta is ok, very strong synthetic mushroom taste though.

  • Probably try carbonara and bolognese for an Italian ouvre this time the

  • I actually still can’t believe this wtf

  • Anyone looked at cheaper alternatives?
Huel black working out at about £1.70 a meal, which isn’t that cheap.

  • Anyone got a Huel referral code?

  • I'm quite liking the Huel ready to drink stuff, but supply in the shops is a bit sketchy and ordering direct is more expensive than getting it from the shop, which is a bit shit.

Co-op have it (intermittently) for £3, is it anywhere else?

  • Same here, the lack of stock in all shops made me give up and order the power. It's less sweet but still pretty satisfying. (Banana)

  • Tesco and Sainsbury's both stock it in some stores. £3 clubcard price in the former, otherwise £3.50. £3.70 in Waitrose.

  • Vanilla Huel Black powder with a banana thrown in (obviously use a blender). The banana obviously adds cals, sugar etc, but reduces the artificial taste significantly.

  • Sainsburys have it, Holland and Barratt health food shops stock it also.
I prefer the taste and smoothness to the equivalent powder version, but quite a bit less protein per serving.

  • I wish the black powder was a bit less gritty, so I might try this.
Banana only adds 70-100 extra calories, so 500 calories for a meal replacement is still pretty good.

    With a medium banana:
    41g protein
    44g carbs
    17g fat
    9.7g fibre

I've got some bags of strawberries and cream left, so not sure how that will taste with a banana blended in.

  • Why Huel Black? Everyone seems to say the maximum protein that can be absorbed per meal is 20g (it irks me that this is never talked about as a g/kg of body weight but that’s by the by).

  • Really? Is that true about the protein. Never heard that, annoying if true

  • Can’t offer a rationale beyond that I’d prefer more protein. No artificial sweeteners is a bonus. As for protein absorption, it’s probably pretty bad anyway compared to other dietary sources. Red meat is still king, hemeproteins from meat have a far superior bioavailability than most plant based protein sources. But I’m not having a meat smoothie as a meal replacement.

And at the end of the day, I’m more likely to consider my daily macros rather than worry about how they break down over individual meals.

And for the 20g thing to be true, there would be no point in eating more than a 100g serving of beefsteak at once (from a protein absorption perspective). And while I don’t have the empirical data to support it, I find that hard to believe.

  • The 20g per meal is from one study, that everyone seems to have taken as fact.

A better figure is 0.4g of protein per kg of body weight. For a 70kg, thats 28g of protein a meal.
But again that is probably based on protein synthesis response to eating protein.

If you're training and in an anabolic state, you are likely to be able to absorb and use more protein, and certainly want to be maximising protein intake, even if some of the protein is 'wasted'. By sticking to 20g max, it is potentially underfueling muscle gain and recovery.

Also everyone's rate of absorption and digestion of protein, carbs and fats are different. Much like pro cyclists are carb digesting monsters, a successful bodybuilder/powerlifter would be a protein digesting machine.

I aim for about 30-40g per meal (including breakfast) and a protein shake of about 25-30g, so between 130-150g of protein a day, at 70kg.

Also in Huel Black's favour, higher protein, lower carbs fits dieting macros better, as well as being slightly more satiating.
