  • conflation of handling properties with wieldiness?

If the conflation is inappropriate, then at least @hippy is not the first to make the same "mistake"
    https://thesaurus.plus/related/handle/wield

  • Tester, with your infinite wisdom, can you confirm if Kimmo is using the word disingenuous correctly? I don't think that saying someone couldn't discern 50g weight placement difference is being disingenuous?
I'd bring it up with Kimmo directly but he seems sensitive to other peoples opinions and I'm worried I'd accidentally let slip what I think about that TCR.

  • can you confirm if Kimmo is using the word disingenuous correctly

It looks like he meant what we would ordinarily think he meant by analysis of the text, but it also looks like he had no rational basis for making the accusation. It's grammatically correct, but logically false.

  • It's grammatically correct, but logically false.

    Thanks!

To me it was implying that Hippy was deliberately being a dick, but I don't think that was the case and didn't think that disingenuous was really the right word.

  • I was wondering about this. My new GRX shifters have got the two new buttons. Do I need another piece of hardware to make them work?
What do people mainly use them for - shifting garmin screens seems the obivous one.

  • I think for the Garmin, the Bluetooth unit.

It's annoying wahoo isn't supported. Or at least I've not worked the same out.

  • You need to add the little in line Bluetooth thing if it didn't come already installed.

Once it's installed you can add a di2 screen to your garmin which shows what gear you're in, battery levels etc. Can also use that to change shifting mode and other things. Kind of handy but I don't use it much tbh.

As well as using the buttons to move screens you can also set double click and long presses to do specific things eg start/stop the route, start a lap etc. Again sometimes useful to be able to do those things with both hands on the bars.

Overall I think its a useful addition, but the Bluetooth widget is expensive for what it is and it feels like it should be bundled with the system as standard instead of an add on

  • I have mine set to change the rear derailleur up and down. The left hand down shift is handy when indicating to turn right and slowing down

  • the little in line Bluetooth thing

What is this, a separate bit, or could it be already installed in the shifters?

    EDIT
So, just googled - I think I would need an extra little box, like this:

  • I suppose Hippy may have seen 'lower CG' and assumed I was talking about handling in the same sense that car people mean, but in his shoes I might be inclined to apply the benefit of the doubt that someone would bring that much wank.

Just smelt like internet pointscoring to me; easy cheap shot. Then if pushback, double down and one or two old mates will bring a hint of dogpile.

    Whatevs, seen it all before

  • You could regale me at length with your opinion of my TCR if you like; I'm truly not fussed.

In fact, there's even a tiny chance something you say about it might convince me to change something. Only fuckwits think there are people they can't learn from...

  • It works on my wahoo (ultegra shifters). I change screens with one of the top buttons. I have the inline wireless unit although it's actually in the handlebar end on it's own cable from the shifter. Figured there was no point in adding a junction that could potentially fail, hidden inside the frame.

  • Do I do that in the di2 app or the wahoo app? I'll look again. Thanks for the pointer.

  • Thanks for the link. And makes sense to connect it like that.
Another £50 means it's not exactly a no brainer!

  • Neat, true, but I've never struggled to swipe to want to waste the extra battery for it.

In heavy rain I just lock the screen on the map and leave it.

  • You need EWWU111
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01L06V9XE/

If you want to try it, mine's gone straight back into the box. I was considering sending it back actually as I don't think I'll use it.

  • own cable from the shifter

do you just have a small cable? i am going to install the same one (or maybe even the bar end one?) on my winter bike to save on the cost of a cable...

  • Thanks, but I think I'm coming round to your point of view. If it was something that just worked with a bit of software / setup that would be fine, but not sure it's worth adding in an extra component just to flip screens.

  • Has anyone run e-tube through a windows emulator on their Mac? I don't have any friends/neighbours I can easily borrow a PC from and local bike shops either can't do it or havent any availability this week

  • Now that you made up your mind:

-90% of the riding I do is structured training with intervals. I use the buttons on the shifters to lap my intervals, especially useful at shorter sprints. I have a Canyon integrated handlebar with outfront mount, and the lap button is in a very awkward spot

-I use a Garmin 520+. I hate the navigation on it. But, if Im navigating a course, that means im mostly riding in a group of 4-6 people, and I like that I can toggle between data and map without letting the bar go. Of course I know how to ride a bike, but its a nice to have.

-Battery level displayed on your head unit.

@onyerbike No personal experience, but when in doubt, Bettershifting: https://bettershifting.com/run-di2-e-tube-project-on-your-mac-using-virtual-box/

  • Yeah, from memory I just ran it down the underside of the drop with a random cable I had. Drilled a small hole and connected it just inside the end of the bar.

  • Absolute dogshit. Works sometimes, doesn't work others. I took a windows laptop that was destined for recycling from work.

  • Are the buttons on the right shifter replaceable?

Developed a fault where it only works every so often. Narrowed it down to this by switch the hood buttons to shift and all is fine.

  • AFAIK, they dont sell the electronic component alone -which is the part that houses the ports wedging into the lever body, and the switches that go under the paddles. You can usually buy the top bracket as a whole, but they just end up being more than buying a complete shifter on the used market:

That is if you're 100% sure that the issue is with the actual microswitch thats inside that electronic bit. Maybe the rubber pointy bit (that touches against the paddle) on it just worn down a bit and needs something to fill back that spot. You can also buy bits & bobs for the paddles if the issue is on the paddle-side.

You can quite easily (and non destructively) take apart the paddle part of the shifter, and check if it reacts reliably if you push the microswitch by hand, not relying on the paddle mechanism.

If you dont want to go through all this, contact Pawel at Di2 gp, and if there isnt a solution, consider donating your bricked shifter for science :)

  • Shimano also found a way back in 2021 that could make it into production?
