There are perfectly respectable looking 'gardens' in car parks and roundabouts all over the country. They probably get an hour's maintenance, once or twice a year. A small tree and a few well chosen shrubs. The garden-tarmaccers will happily spend hours and hours washing and waxing their SUVs. Crap excuse.

Also absolute rubbish to suggest gardening is only enjoyed by the middle classes

Gardening is only hard work if you do fuck all.

A little - often is only needed which is actually enjoyable and a very small price for foxes, owls, woodpeckers and sparrowhawks.. even in a London / suburban garden.

the worst thing about the house we were buying falling through is that we saw a sparrowhawk in the garden and I fully wanted to watch nature take its course

I've got a front garden that is basically 100m² of wasteland and Ive always really wanted it to be a wildflower meadow. Any suggestions for good meadow grass seed.

If my wife thinks I'm seeding a monoculture cricket green then she'll give me the time to seed and mulch properly.

Pictorial Meadows supplied the seed for the Tower of London meadow last year iirc, or these guys for some ready to go turf.
