  • I'm now up to 3 years of pumping

    Saved for posterior-ority

  • Are they robust enough for a fat cunt sprinting out of the saddle? (asking for a friend obvs)

I'm lacking both watts and a sprint but pretty confident in this! Probably stronger than the bike.

  • Is it plastic or aluminium?

  • Plastic bike with budget carbon repair

  • I meant, is the bracket thing plastic or metal?

  • Oh the bike QR holder is metal

  • Nice work!

@dancing james if you're concerned about strength have you seen the post spinnout was replying to? I'm definitely not fat but am reasonably confident it'll deal with more kilos that it currently does.

  • Is that the same wheel holder brackety thing?

  • No but they all look pretty similar. Mine's this one.

  • I’m thinking this winter might be the one I finally give indoor training a try. I don’t have the space to leave it setup (small flat + kids) so I’ll be putting my bike on it every time. Without having any experience of it, it feels like a wheel off/direct trainer will be less setup faff (2 steps - wheel off, bike onto trainer) than a wheel on one (3 steps - wheel off, turbo wheel/tyre on, bike onto trainer). Anyone got experience of this to share? (Or a second hand trainer to sell me?!)

  • Direct mount are more accurate, quieter and better all round

  • The less faff you need to setup, the more inclined you'll be

  • Direct drive, lower faff and noise, handy if you have a flat below you.
Something like a Elite Suito is good as you can fold the legs and store in a narrow space.

  • Thanks, yeah sounds like a clear winner (except on price!)

@Netakure that’s what I’m thinking, unless it’s fairly straightforward I’ll never do it.

@spinnnout yep the noise is definitely a consideration, another plus for direct drive! I’d not thought about the fold-ability, that’s a good point, thanks.

I’ll continue keeping an eye out in classifieds.

  • Only just found the thread, but I recently swapped from a Tacx Flux 1 to a Kickr V5 due to connection issues with the Flux. Kickr is better in every way, except that now everything feels about 10% harder. I haven't yet done a new FTP test, but workouts at or above threshold suddenly feel very difficult! Anyone have a similar experience?

  • i'm going to make an unpopular vote for wheel-on trainer. i just use my normal tyre so I only have one step (bike onto trainer) rather than three steps and I don't seem to go through tyres very quickly at all. it doesn't even seem to wear out summer tyres. maybe i don't ride enough!
i'm sure a wheel-off trainer is better in some other ways but wheel-on seems less faff (and smaller/cheaper).

Is the turbo giving you power readings? Could be where the difference is.

  • I've only ever used them with Zwift, and the differences I mentioned were noticeable when doing a workout on ERG mode.

But each turbo was the power source and not using a Stages or other external source for reading power? It could be that the Flux overread and the Kickr underreads or it could be the delivery/feel or a bit of both.

  • I haven't used any other device for power readings, only ever the turbo itself. I think a lot of it is feel. I find that the flywheel speed has more of an influence on the Kickr, like I need to be in a heavier gear to avoid the ERG spiral of death.

  • Do a test with your current turbo in the gear you plan to use for erg, stick with it

  • Neat! Been meaning to make one as well. Is the base wide enough to get out of the saddle? Any reason for not turning it the other way?

Also, is your NDS crank arm ok?

Base is blenty wide enough when you consider the support is normally a tyre. The turbo can still rock a little, it's good the base isn't too wide as it can rock with the bike without stressing joins (but I'm not an engineer).

NDS crank? There is some old electric tape on there to cover the Stages, probably had to lock it up outside sometime

  • I'm struggling to get Zwift activities to sync with Garmin connect- I have connected the two via the Zwift connections page but doesn't seem to have done anything. Thanks.
