  • Irig stream and an iPhone would be way better than minidisc.

  • I'll have a read up on digital conversions.
    Ta all

  • I get why you would do it. I record a lot of records (+2k so far). I'm using a decent analog->digital convertor (ADC) and Logic. It took a while to arrange templates and figure out keystrokes to streamline the process. I also use Yate to fill the tags from Discogs for the files that I'm creating. It's all computer intensive and not that much fun.

  • I was just going from what i used to do line in to mini disc record straight through then mark tracks. It's simplicity I'm after and the mini disc was quite nice to use. I like the idea of going straight in the phone

  • I would think an MD deck would be easier than a portable but I did most of my recordings with a portable model BITD.

  • More hi-end hifi spotting, Open House this time

  • Did you offer your services to make some new stands?

  • Shame they won't be able to afford to switch it on this year :)

  • they won't be able to afford to switch it on

If they have electric heating anyway, they might as well use the hifi instead, the difference between a valve amp and an electric heater is thermodynamically insignificant.

  • Something tells me they will

  • That roof light must play havoc with the acoustics. Did they actually own any records to play on the system?

  • Yeah loads. I did mention that it looked like quite a lively room (zero soft furnishing or much furniture really, lots of glass and concrete), which the owner politely acknowledged.

  • Always thought the hifi in Parasite looked rad, but would have sounded like garbage in that room.

  • That looks like 16 KT66 or KT88 valves in the top amps. Don’t recognise the clear ones in the bottom amps. I bet you can’t even comfortably switch that on in summer.

  • The B&O spendy solutions would probably work better than the valves and Klipsch/Tannoy option in those rooms.. DSP.

  • I guess the photos on the website don't do it justice. Not really my kind of home looks a bit sterile for me. Looks well done and maintained though.

The parasite stereo needs a bit of toe in on the speakers at least!

  • It's just how inused to to do it so familure to me. Is the A to D route accessible on a budget. Another reason why I was going second hand mini disc. Seen them f0r 30quid.

Edit. I know audiofile and budget don't really go hand in hand.

Do you want your recordings on a physical format? If not, then recording via a a/d converter and a computer/tablet/phone is the way to go.

If yes, then minidisc, it's a fun format that still sounds great. I'm more than happy with the sound quality out of my Sony MZ-N510 and a pair of £20 Moondrop Chu Chinese IEMs, and my Sony MDS-JE480 deck. With the advent of WebMD Net MD is actually easy to use now too.

  • I like the idea of having another gadget but in reality I'll probably be using my phone to listen on the way to work so I'll look at the A /D route

  • I think you can use pretty much any USB compliant ADC with the iphone/ipad usb adaptor.

  • Excuse my snigger in the middle of this it was brought on by the disbelief at what I was hearing and seeing.

  • Shame. Good luck getting them restored for £50.

  • When they say restored they mean

Blowing the dust off them. It’s just an expense they can say they incurred.
They don’t look like they need anything doing to them. Like he said just before, his father put them in the attic years ago along with that Thorens deck +++

  • Hey guys, my Pioneer A400/Tannoy setup wasn't used for a while because my boy was a toddler and I didn't have anywhere safe to put the setup while he was "cruising" and rampaging.

Once I got them set back up, I feel like I'm really missing the treble from the sound. On songs/tracks I know well, cymbals are glaringly missing, and the sound is so muted. Is there any obvious things I can try or check? It seems apparent on all inputs (record, CD, tv/chromecast), but I don't have a way to test different speakers.
