Looking to buy a cd player off ebay budget of about 80 to 100. Any stand out bargains to be had.
I was reading up and the Rotel RCD-965BX had good
reviews but any other suggestions welcome.i've got the rcd 965bx from dazaa on here
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/250030/?offset=225#comment12733388it's a nice cd, i've got it playing through a mission cyrus 1 amp with no tone controls and it is a bit bright, cymbals can be a bit overpowering, if i had bass and treble controls i'd down the treble a bit and up the bass, but it sounds great
and as you've seen it's well regarded online -

i have a quad 306 here while my radford is on blocks and i am mightily impressed. i am convinced it is better at the higher/lower ends of the spectrum.
i now don't know what i am going to do.

I have a gently improved (not by me) Quad 34. It's lovely but I think my Meridian 501 sounds better so I've gone back to that for the time being.
Edit: just realised you are talking about the power end, not the pre end... so ignore me!

Always fancied a 306, the best looking Quad I reckon.
Do an A/B test when you get the Radford back, then sell it and spend the cash on something more fun when you realise it's no better!

• #11432
what are you going to do with the 34?
-
• #11433
it does do quite a lot of things better than the quad.
but for the money, the quad is amazing

i have a croft 25RS (?) pre here on loan at the moment. it is pretty cool.
i know someone who is looking to move a MF NuVista 300 pre/power set, so i might give that a go.

Thing on radio 4 about vinyl revival and how in the 90’s nobody bought it (except people like me without a cd player)
just looked at the price of nirvana unplugged 1994 white vinyl???
might be a bit more careful with it now.. -

I have no particular plans for it. I haven't thought about selling it as it's a nice thing and in my mind, I feel like a spare pre amp is always handy which is fairly irrational, I know.
Happy to lend it if you want to give it a try. If you like it I could probably be persuaded to part ways with it permanently.

I need a long rca cable. Nothing too flashy but 12 or 15m long. Any suggestions? It’s to connect a tv to active ceiling speakers…

Ta for tbe recommendation butI went for an onkyo in as it was twined the amp I have. It nice to listen to cds again and I'm pleased with the outcome.

I had the Drill EP by Radiohead. Cashed it in about 10 years ago. I got the princely sum of £80 I think. It's now at £250.

Round at a clients house earlier to quote on a job. Googled the speakers later - £40k B&O
Might ask for a listen next time

I’m redoing my record wall at the moment.
Previously had floor standers but the room is pretty small and I’d rather have a clean look / more space.
Am I mad to go for in ceiling speakers on the vaulted ceiling? I’m using a Sonos amp anyway and their in ceiling speakers can be angled to offset the slope.
I’d put them about halfway up the slope… ultra wide camera fucks with the proportions but you get the idea.
Room is about 2.5m wide and 4m deep. I probably sit around 3-3.5m away.

You can visualise the problems with soundwaves if you do that right? They will cross over at all sorts of angles increasing and decreasing their strength.
You can eq out some problems but acoustically you would need quite a dense mass behind you to soak up the reflections.
From the point of view of the compromises with room size anyway it probably doesn't matter. Small rooms are tricky unless you use near field monitoring and even then bass nodes can be a problem.

I'm not sure I fully understand. I've updated the post with circles for approx speaker locations and a square for where the wires would exit.
The Sonos in ceiling speakers can be angled once placed so I could angle the drivers and tweeters to aim directly for me which is basically where I'm taking the photo from.
Bear in mind that this is a work space, not some ultra high end listening space. I'll actually have my back to this setup for the majority of listening.
I could also place them in the top of the ceiling, closer to the centre of the room, then angle them towards me still...

I like the idea of the angled placement as opposed to ceiling, no particular reason though.
-
• #11446
I probably wasn't very clear. I understood it's not critical listening you are trying to create, in which case it probably doesn't matter that you mount the speakers in the ceiling (angled or not). The Sonos room eq feature will help to even out some problems anyway.
From an acoustic science point of view you shouldn't do it though.

Minidisc looking to get a little portable recorder to record vinyl on too there are loads on ebay but any stand out ones that were built to last I rember some if them being a bit flakey.
-
• #11448
Makes sense. Hoping the trueplay feature will iron out any major issues.
Ordered a couple so let’s see how install goes.

Minidisc looking to get a little portable recorder
Why would you do that? Rotating discs have been superseded by chip based storage. ATRAC is lossy, linear PCM needs less than 1GB per hour and flash storage starts at <20p/GB

It's just how inused to to do it so familure to me. Is the A to D route accessible on a budget. Another reason why I was going second hand mini disc. Seen them f0r 30quid.
Edit. I know audiofile and budget don't really go hand in hand.
Ah. Ok.
Dear fixed gear audiophiles, there's (450 and counting pages of) a more active and storied hi fi thread here:
