  • Always amazes me this is the typical person that ends up in the upper echelons of politics.

    Yup, it is quite scary.

  • Sorry if I touched a nerve (only part joking, seems an area of interest for you).

I suspect that a Rwandan reactor supplying the UK with power would have other, bigger, challenges beyond people stealing an extension cord connecting both countries. Hence the joke.

  • Probably not all the challenges you imagine, supply of energy from Morocco is due to start in 2027

  • That’s great, didn’t know, cheers.

The challenges I imagine are more geopolitical and diplomatic in nature. Unless they plan to drill down, drop a cable into the Lidenbrock Sea, and have it pop out in the UK, I think a Rwanda alternative would be more complex to arrange.

And even then the Lidenbrock doesn’t extend as far as Rwanda so that wouldn’t work.

  • Haven't seen details of the deal but would hope we get to keep the electricity.

  • I don’t get why nuclear is considered green and renewable. What’s the score?

Nobody sees it as renewable, but some green campaigners have come to see it as significantly better than fossil fuels. George Monbiot, for example.

In other news, some Tories have a petition going to get "Johnson stays" added as an option in the leadership vote. Keeping their finger firmly on that suicide button.

  • Liz Truss "Unleash the gas supplies we have in the north sea".

It's 40c for the first time ever, London and half of Europe on fire, but more gas?

How would that even reduce bills?

  • How would that even reduce bills?

It wouldn't, it would just make more profits for big oil, as it would mainly get exported and little to help domestically which they won't ever acknowledge

  • "Unleash the gas supplies Scotland has in the north sea"

And Scotland is much more likely to avanti with her in (nominal) charge.

  • Interesting article on the state of fusion power- which would appear to require current (Canadian) nuclear plants to supply the required Tritium.

  • Back to our shitty new PM. Truss apparently going to keep Dorries and Mogg in cabinet.
    Jesus H Christ.

Can only hope the next few weeks cause some schism in the tories and somehow we end up with an election sooner rather than later.

  • She's been backed the whole way by the ERG so not a surprise. It does hopefully mean that they explode sooner than expected but these nutters can do a fuck load of damage in a short time...

  • Rumour is that Johnson will give Dorries a peerage on his way out which is a nice segue to my next point. Peerages should be forever linked to whoever appointed them, if that (ex) PM is shown to have broken the law, they all go.

  • Funnily enough, right next to Hartlepool power station is RSPB Saltholme which often attracts a lot of interesting birds, or so I'm told from my mam who gets annoyed by the bird watches turning up. There's also Seal Sands which is some kind of significant biological site.

With all the chemical plants around there as well we'd often get informational pamphlets through the door with warnings on what to do if we heard the sirens going off. Never had anything about the power plant but I imagine that's because we can see it from my parents back window, so anything going on there is likely to kill them before an alarm would be heard.

  • going to keep Dorries and Mogg in cabinet

Yeah there going to double down on the culture war stuff. That's all they've got for the next election, ignore the cost of living crisis and blame everything on trans rights, and every other minority.

    its worked before!

  • Anyone else seen the footage of a young Liz Truss when she was in the Lib Dems, cheering on a vox pop with a couple of people in their 50's saying the Monarchy should be abolished

Amazing how quickly people can drop their values when exposed to a bit of power and money

    Edit: found it

Abkut five years ago I was walking past Sizewell B on the beach with my wife and we were caught in a torrential downpour so we dashed for cover under a tree right by the nuclear site fence. Whilst standing there we noticed a very strong smell of chlorine. Enough to make our eyes water. Sure enough, alarms started going off and two nuclear constabulary 4x4s bombed it down the beach to get everybody to leave immediately.

Turns out there'd been a smallish chlorine spill from a tank. No harm done to anything or anybody AFAIK.

It's quite a spooky experience to be standing by a nuclear power station when the alarms start going off!

    /CSB.

  • Can't get rid of the Lords soon enough.
That and binning FPTP should be first priorities of the next (non tory) government.

No referendums on it - just get it done.

  • in cabinet

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari wouldn’t be far off

  • That and binning FPTP

Yeah this is top priority, hopefully its the price of a confidence and supply agreement with the Lib dems.

  • hopefully its the price of a confidence and supply agreement with the Lib dems.

Well, they’re certainly not going to be mugged off with the promise of another referendum this time, or the offer of coalition.

I think it’ll be the price for the ‘unofficial’ electoral pact that we saw trial-run in the last two by-elections.

  • Proportional representation and a federalist system for all the home nations

  • Yeah, I always wondered about that actually. How far is the UK away from being a federation?

  • Under Sunak, who wants to significantly reduce Holyroods independence, further away than today.

  • Proportional representation

Sadly, not on the agenda until a third (or even a fourth) party advocating it is required for a coalition government. Even then, it would have to be one hell of a horse trade.

But yes, this will be a big step on the road.
