  • Is there a better third party front end for searching Discogs, and it's marketplace? Seems to be harder work searching for what you want than it needs to be. Frustrating especially for Jazz where searching for the credited main artist brings up everything they were a sideman on also.

  • Not aware of anything but Discogs needs to invest in its infrastructure and experience generally. The site and app are so painful and flaky. Had a very unsatisfactory and ultimately unfruitful digging exercise earlier. Not sure what its model actually is, but it feels like it could/should be a lot slicker than it is, considering it is basically the option for 2nd hand.

Related to that, does anyone buy on eBay? Not many sellers on there these days but the whole experience is a joke now. You gon’ get sniped. For literally everything. It feels broken.

  • Discogs does the cataloging of a collection quite well and gives you the option of offering some of those for sale as long as you're not in a hurry. To me it's useful to see versions of a release that are available. Searching outside of the release does seem a bit hit and miss.

There's a lot of new commercial sellers on there now. Juno has weighed in quite heavily in the UK.

  • I just wish I didn’t get the ‘oh snap!’ message 20 times a day!

The search is really annoying too. It won’t let you go back to the list of results it presents to you after your initial search, so you end up re-inputting your search terms over and over again.

  • It is pretty basic on the UI and search front. I'd like to see the release code on the results page of the collection search.

I spend most of my time doing the same things I've done a million times over many years so I'm a bit blind to most of the site. I think the power users are mostly dealing with the API so they don't care.

It does seem fairly well balanced between the different activities though. The data nerds seem to get along picking holes in contributions and the sellers seem to manage to sell. The data it generates on sales and clicks would be quite interesting from a commercial point of view but who knows what they are doing with that.

You know it started as one guy managing his record collection!

  • About to try to sell some of my little played records on Discogs, any recommendations for LP mailers?

  • Just get some used cardboard boxes and make them yourself, that's what I do and it's easy once you get a system. It's good to repurpose things and it's saved me hundreds over the years.

  • Ta! Do you recommend stiffeners with those also?

  • I wrap the record with a square of bubble wrap and tape the opening and sides. Remove the record and inner from the sleeve where possible.

  • If you are based anywhere near Archway I’m happy to give you a load (20ish) of used ones. Most have stiffeners and or extra cardboard for extra protection, lmk

  • TIL that pressing plates are nickel plated.

  • Just emailed Mike P aka u-ziq who says they're releasing a 25th anniversary edition of Lunatic Harness on July 8th.

  • Doing a flying visit to Soho before a meeting tomorrow, any other recommendations for used jazz vinyl (fnar) other than Sounds of the Universe and Reckless?

  • Sister Ray has a decent second hand section. Most of the stock in Soho is overpriced for the grade and over-graded so 2 x pricey.

  • I think that goes for most places, at least in my experience. I buy most of my used records from Discogs, but sometimes it’s just nice to browse in a record shop.

  • I know. I try not to buy anything though!

Record fairs are better on price but worse on quality.

I really try not to buy records on when I'm on holiday too. I have way too many right now though.

  • Charity shops finding out about Discogs is a disaster

  • Less so for the charities.

  • There are some good jazz represses around at the moment though. Blue Note seems to have sorted the pressing problems with the early releases.

  • Juno on Discogs have been hoovering up a lot of new sales too.

  • Would need someone who both knows about Kasso-Kasso being Italo Disco from the guy who formed Goblin but also knows nothing about vinyl grading to pay £12 for a scuffed copy.

  • seriously. WHO TOLD THEM

how am I supposed to take advantage of charities fs

  • If I had to choose between taking up golf or buying and listen to mostly anything of the reissues they sell for > £100 I'd choose golf and listen to Kind of Blue on the phone.
