  • seems a bit harsh

  • Re-issues are certainly the way to buy Blue Note, 'cos lol at buying some of the 1st or 2nd pressings now.

Away from Blue Note (and Prestige, Riverside etc) though there's still some really nice 50s/60s pressings you can pick up for less than the price of some re-issues.

Back with a new stack of 75 Soul 45’s to be auctioned off on eBay, in a wide variety of styles covering both the 60’s and the 70’s.

As usual most are in great condition, with the majority coming from un-played to minimally played Store Stock, many with the original company sleeves in crisp condition.

My shipping rates, both domestic ($3.50) and international ($8.00) remain very competitive.

Bought a few 7” singles from this guy over the past 12 months.

  • I'm guessing you mean Mobile Fidelity, Acoustic Sounds etc. I buy those from a distro and they're like hens teeth even at that level. For example I have this :-

It's a nightmare buying this stuff but the returns are pretty decent if you decide to sell. Biggest problem is getting a decent copy.

  • anyone pick either of the two recent popol vuh vinyl box sets ?

  • The latest ones tick all the boxes and they do seem to have fixed the pressing quality now. There was some talk about problems with the tape machine at the mastering stage with early reissues in the series. Although they have been mastered by Kevin Gray who is around the top of the game at the moment.

Quality wise they are a little bit lower quality than speakers corner but they have some of the biggest albums and speakers corner don't get a look in on the really good stuff. It's close on quality but they must have wanted to make a little more money.

  • I've bought Blue Note classic series re-issues as well as some Tone Poet series. I've also bought

    Music Matters Jazz
    Analogue Productions / Acoustic Sounds
    Speaker's Corner
    Simply Vinyl

I don't bother with 45 rpms. I cba to get up every 10 minutes to flip the record, two discs per LP takes up space, they cost too much and I'm not convinced the SQ is much better than well pressed 33 rpms.

I don't buy Music Matters anymore. They are too expensive, and I received one disc which was damaged, and I cba to send stuff back to 'murica.

A while back, Blue Note classics were fairly hit and miss. I had a few duds. More recently, they have been ok. The Tone Poets I have bought have been fine.

Analogue Productions / Acoustic sounds have been the most consistently good in my experience. QRP and Kevin Gray mastering seems to be a recipe for success; I've not had a dud disc from them. They are pricey but I'd say reasonable value for the quality.

Speaker's Corner I've also found fine, maybe not quite to the standards of AP, but consistently good.

    Just my experience.

  • I have not, but your post inspired me to put the Aquirre soundtrack on 👍

  • Your experience concurs with mine almost entirely except I've had one or 2 duds from Analog Productions and only 1 disk from speakers corner with even the smallest fault.

Analog Productions have stood by the product and sent replacements though.

I think this type of pressing is worth it to some people most of the time. Considering how unlikely it is to find mint original of most of these reissues. Even VG+ is a stretch and potentially thousands for some of the first US pressings.

If you're buying in Europe and don't want to mess with the second hand market Speakers Corner is a brilliant label. You're not going to get Kind Of Blue or Blue Train on that label though.

  • Anyone ordered secondhand vinyl from America? I have spotted a 12" I want but am unsure what extra charges I will get for importing it (it is $20).

  • Test pressing from Sam Wilkes arrived today... 'Ditto Edition' (7 of 8) as the final track on side A is erroneously present on side B too.

  • My £2 car boot copy of Led Zep IV appears to be eye wateringly expensive. Thanks Discogs.

  • Charity shops not knowing that lots of rare and expensive CD's are listed on Discogs is a real bonus!
( says the man who has just hoovered up a pile of obscure hip hop cd's worth £40-£70 each.)

  • I have that too, but god knows what actual version it is, and the grade is probably g+ at best, which I find weird.

It just sounds quite shit, but hasn’t been played much or abused.

I come from the world of 12” 45rpms that can take a lot of abuse, and there are some 33 comps that are second hand and have been thrown about a bit and have loads of ‘surface noise’ or deep rotational clicks/pops.

It definitely feels like there is a big difference between a VG+ 12” 45 and a VG+ 33 lp. Like, I’d take quite a battered looking 45 that plays well, but a 33 seems like it can be looked at the wrong way and is basically a G.

  • Another bandcamp friday today..

  • picked up both of insides' albums on special at £10 each. their debut is one of my favourite records ever

  • I was going to give mine to a charity shop recently but checked some on discogs and decided to keep them!

  • An 80s Japanese Kind Of Blue or Blue Train is probably still the best way to go on a budget.

I picked this up recently and it sounds fantastic, my only Acoustic sounds series. I would be tempted to pick up their pressing of love supreme as I think it will be better than my 70's repress.

https://www.discogs.com/release/19292413-Oliver-Nelson-The-Blues-And-The-Abstract-Truth I'm still hopeful of picking up a HMV one.

  • Picked up 3 x 12" = £52.70 😰

  • I have 2 of the acoustic sounds abstract truth, one very slightly better than the other!

Love Supreme from that series is very good, I had been waiting for a few years to get a version like it. If they sell out it will be hard to find an alternative. I got lucky and got a good pressing too. Really good version of that album although personally I prefer Giant Steps and Rhino did a mono version that's still in circulation :-

  • You have expensive taste.

  • Only picked up a Yabby You 7" so far.

  • Playing at 45 rpm reduces the surface noise. That's physics. Also the main reason for 2x45rpm versions of albums.

  • Ok I have added the version of love supreme to my wantlist, can't seem to see it for sale in the uk.

    Did you check this out?

https://www.discogs.com/release/15989776-John-Coltrane-Giant-Steps, I'm guessing it's the version you mentioned plus extras. Ok, so it's stereo... so not the same.

  • Big debate regarding mono vs stereo blue note from that period. I've never felt the need to have a stereo version of giant steps, personal choice though.
