  • What wood did you decide on? I need to replace ours and construction seems achievable with the tools and space I have already.

  • None, as everything was coming from a DIY shop, I was considering decking wood as it came with a 5 or 10 year guarantee...but reading the guarantee shows it isn't worth anything.

Looked at an ex display 40mm think door that I was going add to the sides to fit the space....but door sold by the time I'd umm and ahh.

At the mo I have a load of pallet and packing crate wood that I was thinking of making in to a gate.

  • Those are what I mean. It will be a general purpose shed and hopefully workshop. Not with any heavy machines, but I would like the option for maybe a table saw or jointer in future. Most guides say no more than 1.5m between screws so I went for 3ft centres for ease of calculation (for an 18x15 building).

  • Just need one of these to do put them in.

  • Would you like any advice on how you might do that?

  • Larch. You want to construct it out of larch. I use this place for all of my larch and doug fir needs. You could also make your gate out of doug fir as it's nearly as rot resistant as larch but has better tensile and compressive strength.

Benson's is a sawmill so it will be rough sawn, but excellent quality.

Not sure what their delivery radius is but they've delivered to Hemel Hempstead for me in the past.

  • I’m getting staining through two coats on ten year old pickets, which I never had with the Superdec. I have a tin of Zinnser primer somewhere, so I’ll see how far that will go on the rest. I picked up the recco for the Barn Paint from Painters Pit Stop.

  • If you can afford it I would use (and did) sapele

  • Staining is difficult for water based paints to control. I use Cover Stain from Zinsser which is oil based and drys very fast (but is not micro vapour permeable, damn) Having read the tin for Zinsser 123 I note it says that you need to allow a much longer than normal drying time to improve the stain blocking. In my experience it doesn't stain block but I've not left it to find out if that improves with time.

tldr Use Zinsser Cover Stain for guaranteed results.

  • At the mo, no idea. Thank you, at the mo I need more than advice. Need some incentive to do anything.

Am over thinking this and procrastinating.

@Bobbo Not in the UK :(

  • Larch

Blunts all your tools due to high silica content tho. High burning temp too - they plant rows of it as fire breaks as pine can be burning down right beside it and it won't catch alight!

  • I know but it's really nice to work with, grain is predictable and easy to read.

Added to the above it lasts for aaaages untreated outdoors thanks to its high resin content

  • I know, I just wanted to flex larch knowledge like the nerd I am. I'd deffo use it for outdoor use. Siberian and slow grown if possible!

  • French scieries are vastly cheaper than DIY stores. Find a recommendation for a good one near you. I bought all the timber to build my kitchen units for about 150€. (The French for ‘planed all round’ is ‘rabotée’)
Failing that there are a lot of destockage places with more finished timber for a good discount.

  • Thank you, never even though of scieries. Sort of makes sense that there are no timber yards as such.

Wonder how good google reviews are on this.

  • It's OK, I only buy wood from sustainable sources. And all my tofu is organic and free range.

  • Do we have an interior design thread? I want to decorate the inside of my log cabin, it currently has a whitewash over natural wood, and all my shelving is bare wood, would like to introduce some colour, but struggling for inspiration.

  • Thanks, will look into that! Bit of planning over Christmas and hopefully get it built early in the new year.

  • Doh, not sure how I missed that! Thanks.

  • I can possibly put you in touch with the guys putting in the shed?

  • Thanks but I didn't want to bother them with inane ramblings while I'm still in the head scratching phase. If I get any closer I'll give you a shout.

  • Not garage door level but currently 2 days into stripping the wallpaper, carpet and paint from the hallway ahead of the plasterer coming next weekend and the place looks absolutely terrible. Only gets better from here right?!?
