  • 3rded, my frame (after screw up from framebuilder discovered) took about a week at the powdercoaters to be stripped, and they had all the nasty stuff at their disposal.

  • Take care with anything that has dichloromethane in it - that stuff is seriously carcinogenic.

  • Where can I buy (not rent) these?

    https://www.direct-digital.com/en/hire/scaffold-tube-barrel-joiner-external

Specifically that rather than something like this:

    https://www.tubeclampsdirect.co.uk/product/1426/Scaffold_Clamp_Pressed_Steel_Sleeve_Coupler

The latter to me looks less secure.

I need to join 3 x 2m pieces of alu scaff together and suspend a 5kg weight in the centre for about 2 hours and presume the first link would do the trick but can't easily get to London in time to collect.

  • Available in 5l tubs I see. I want to strip these, do you think I’ll need 5l?

  • Kee Systems will do something that will do that job.
They have two different types - internal and external.

  • I've got a half full 0.5l can of dichloromethanol here which you are welcome to if you want to try it.

  • Thanks. Is one safer than the other i.e. internal Vs external? And is there a max length? Could I do 3 x 2 meter with 2 joining pieces or even 4 X 2 meter with 3 joining pieces?

  • That would be very kind- whereabouts is “here”?

  • Dunno, if I'm honest. You might be best off asking Kee Systems that question. It's pretty robust stuff. My desk is supported by it. I can confirm that it'll support the weight of two consenting adults shagging on it.

  • Here is Como Road, a stone's throw from the BP garage on the South Circ.

  • That’s a short walk from me, when would be convenient to pop over?

  • Come over now if you like. I'll PM you the addy.
@Dammit I'm interested to know whether this works or not

  • Definitely not. If you want a smaller quantity, I've got 5 litres of the stuff at my industrial unit near Newmarket. Not sure it's the kind of stuff I should be popping in the post though.

The problem you’ll have with just the solvent is it evaporates off quickly. I think part of the function of it being in goo (apart from keeping it in place) is it traps the solvent and stops it evaporating so quickly.

Mix up some wallpaper paste and chuck a bit in. If it’s not the gelling agent for KY jelly (natrosol?), it’s probably the same stuff!

  • According to the internet, dichloromethane has been banned in DIY products since 2016. So yer new bottles of Nitromors won’t have it in it.

  • I was thinking of dropping the brake lever clamps in an old jam jar, covering with the Cancer-liquid, putting the lid on the jar, giving it a shake and then running away from it and hiding behind the sofa whilst it goes to work. Reckon my plan is doomed to failure?

  • My bottle of dichloromethanol has 0171 as the prefix of the phone number on the price tag - which should give an idea of it's vintage.

  • Reckon my plan is doomed to failure?

It should work, but could be improved.

    1. Do the whole thing outdoors, and retire indoors while waiting
    2. Swirl, don't shake. The last thing you want is to break the container while agitating and douse yourself
    3. Put a pin-hole in the lid for pressure relief as the vapour pressure of CH2Cl2 is nearly half a bar at room temperature
    4. Do it overnight when the ambient temperature is lower to avoid boiling off your precious cancer juice

Of course, my primary recommendation would be to not use CH2Cl2 at home, it's restricted for a reason.

  • Do the whole thing outdoors, and retire indoors while waiting

    • Will do

    • Noted

    • Can't promise that one, I'll put it somewhere cool though (my garage?)

  • Paint stripper, whilst not having cancer juice in it any more, does in fact strip paint. I have used wilkos own for a full frame. Comes in a 500ml ish bottle and costs about 2 quid.

  • What's a good free or single purchase PDF reader/editor? Acrobat DC is basically the only thing I regularly use for a 50 quid a month creative cloud subscription. I very very occasionally use After Effects and Illustrator but usually just to make amendments to a project that someone else has created. Adobe are offering creative cloud for 25 quid a month if I stay but can I be bothered tying myself into another year?

I'd like to know this too plz. I hate subscriptions. Also to pay £50/month is nuts if you only use it a couple times a month.

  • hi all, my questions is: where is the best place in london for a newbie fixed owner with not endless dosh or mechanical experience (but whom loves shredding) to get a few parts and adjustments done and hopefully pick some mechanical skills upon along the way? a workshop or such maybe?
    fanx
