I was just looking at that :) Some of the reviews look a bit worrying with the hose splitting. I was also looking at uberbike hoses, but not seen many reviews of these in use in the real world.
-
• #7253
ah yeah I see two reviews saying it has split. Thats not been my experience with them!
-
• #7254
Well, I'll give it a go. I hope there's enough slack in the cables installed at the moment to allow me to raise the bars up 2-3cm for less back pain. It might mean I can't turn the bars past 90 degrees but I would ride my bike like that in the real world unless I like the idea of going to A&E

Yeah I think if you don't want to pay the price of shimano kits then you just have to take a punt on these no name hoses. It's certainly possibly QC isn't going to be the same as shimano.
fwiw I didn't have any issues with mine, no split hoses, brakes work and I still have all my teeth...

I’ve also bought some bh90 hose off Amazon, the ad said “Tbest” but it was branded as something else when it arrived. Have fitted it and the included barbs + olives without issues but not actually bled and used the brakes yet.

If you could share a link that would be appreciated.
What's the difference between the BH59 and BH90 hoses? Shimano instructions say the 4700 levers should use the former, and my r7020 should use the latter. Are they cross-compatible or would I need to stick to what Shimano are saying?
-
• #7258
They´re cross compatible(ish) according to the internet. The bh90 has a different internal diameter, hence the proprietary barb, but the outside diameter is the same. As I understand it bh90 works with everything but possibly bh59 won't work with some more modern brakes. The olives are a little different, idk if that's why bh59 won't work with newer brakes? I've just fitted bh90 hose to a pair of mtb calipers which would have vome with bh59 hoses originally, no issues as far as I can tell.

Olives are the same, ID is different and barbs match that, you'll probably get away with either but bh90 is specced for the newer or better stuff.

Also - will be 8070 shifters need an adaptor for the bleeding funnel/filler?
Yes

For fucks sake. Genuinely approaching the end of my tether with bikes.
They’ve become a pain in the arse to work on.

I bet you’ve got about five spare bikes to ride while yours is being cosseted back to health.
I’ve got one bike so I don’t want it languishing in a queue at the bike shop.
Bike mechanics have never been so in demand and they’ve let that power go to their heads. They’re unbearable.

Average of 1 month backlog here at the moment for anything more complicated than reindexing gears.

I've got an adapter your welcome to borrow off the epic bleed kit that's sitting unused at the moment.
-
• #7267
Thanks - that’s really kind. I’ve just ordered the metal one they sell.
I’m just annoyed because I thought I had what I needed to get started.
I’m actually to ride the bike so perhaps I should stop being an entitled prick and enjoy that for now.

Your LBS will likely have a hundred adaptors knocking about, they come with all those brakes and any bikes with them on.

@Brommers posted this up thread.
Does anyone know where I’ll get one please? I don’t really know what search terms to use.
Also - will be 8070 shifters need an adaptor for the bleeding funnel/filler?
its called a rockshox reverb barb connector
Its not in stock there but for pre order. Havent looked about much but you should be able to get one.
Good chance your lbs will give you one -

So probably best to stock up on BH90 cables to ensure compatibility across the 105/Tiagra levers.
I just saw UberBike have their own brand stuff, spec looks similar to BH90 with the 2.1mm internal diameter and it comes in a choice of colours, so orange and/or blue naturally pulls at the heart strings.
Also, just realised, now I've got a new fork, I'll need to undo the brake line as it's all internally routed. Two questions, is it best to disconnect at the lever or the caliper? And do all I need to do is use a new olive, no need to trim down and use a new insert?
-
• #7271
It depends on the caliper, lever and routing, but as long as there is no bango on your caliper, then I imagine disconnecting and unbolting the caliper would be easier as you then won't have to remove the bar tape etc.
Unfortunately you can't just put a new olive on because it is crushed around the hose and barb. It may be possible to recover the barb but it is a lot of effort. Fortunately, you don't need a new olive. I've swapped loads of brakes without putting a new olive on, never had an issue with leaking.
-
• #7272
I'm a little confused, you say you can't put a new olive on as it's crushed, and then say I don't need a new olive as you've swapped loads of brakes without putting a new olive in...
-
• #7273
It's crushed onto the end of the hose, around the barb, if there's room to pull that through whatever it needs pulling through you can usually just reconnect it, if not then trim olive and barb off and fit new ones. If you're just buying plain replacement hose, make sure you either don't have a banjo fitting at the caliper, or you've got some kind of reusable banjo to go with it, Shimano ones come crimped to the hose and aren't removable from that hose.

Ok so I’m obviously an idiot and have very possibly fucked my LH lever by over tightening the nut (not a euph). Heard a snap and then saw this crack in the plastic casing. There doesn’t appear to be a leak. Is the lever fucked? Will I die?

Have you bled the system and squeezed the lever?
Mayve there's a separate part that carries the fluid inside the plastic and you haven't completely fucked it.
I've checked my amazon order history and this is the one I bought but it seems to have went up in price by £2
But I've used it with no issues and it has some inserts and barbs too. Its 3 meters long so will be enough to cut and use for front and rear.
