  • Never knew about that even though I must have cycled past lots of times! Do you happen to know if they’re open through lockdown? Google seems to think not

  • Has your grinder arrived? FedEx said mine was coming Friday 5th. But hasn’t turned up yet. Tbh I thought the 5th was ambitious as I only ordered on the 1st.

  • I don't think so. I'll be popping up for there when he's open.

I think his coffee was the first proper coffee I ever bought in about 2004. Such a nice man too. Every time I bought a bag of his coffee the whole of my office would smell of coffee all day.

From memory he had about five different beans but one of them came in two roast options. Always the same five. While busy for drop ins I think most of his trade was with restaurants in the area.

Definitely not third wave but excellent coffee nonetheless 😂

    Another article about him:

  • Not even single-dosing? Pah! Definitely a Monmouth drinker... ;)

  • Not yet - had the same delivery date and also thought it’d be optimistic. Just checked and it was on the move from China yesterday evening/afternoon, so I’m guessing customs next and delivery once that’s sorted. I’d read 5/7/10 working days so still looking ballpark right, not sure why they said the 5th though!

@Stonehedge Thanks for the feedback, will definitely be interested in giving the guy a go once things are on the move again ☕️

  • I'd like to weigh in on the Monmouth discussion. I think it's easy to knock them, but they sell decent coffee at reasonable prices. Considering I'm drinking 250g-500g /week, spending £25-£30 /week on coffee is expensive, whereas spending £16-20 is much more reasonable.

Being able to buy more expensive coffee either shows you have more disposable income or you value coffee over other things, which is perfectly fine, but does that make you more of a coffee fan than others? If the latter, then perhaps you're more committed... but do we really need to be ranking ourselves over how much we know about, enjoy, or are committed to coffee?

I'd love to be buying expensive, incredible coffee all the time but I cannot afford to do so, so I buy pretty good coffee most of the time and treat myself to extra nice coffee sometimes.

  • This one for example, is an absolute banger, but only £8/250g. Bargain in my opinion.

  • Ha yeah, tried single dosing (even bought the bellows!) and compared it to beans that sat in the hopper - couldn't tell the difference. So I bought a larger hopper that could take the 340gm bags that my roaster uses. : )
Oh and tried Monmouth while in London a few years back; to quote, pah! No idea which roast it was.

  • I don't get why they are so slated.

I think what they do is great - I can't think of another place where they'll offer free tasters of a bunch of different coffees before buying some beans. The only negative to my mind is that their house roasting style is a bit darker than I like, which is why I don't go there more often myself. However, hard to argue they've not been trailblazers in bringing decent coffee from small producers to London, and have been doing it for years

  • Try roasting your own beans. It'll make you appreciate all other professionally roasted beans. :)

  • Having a mare with my Baratza Vario grinder.
stopped working earlier, found the issue where pulley had come dislodged. Fixed that.

But now when I tighten the top burr the adjustment level pings down and I can't adjust the grind setting as normal. Works fine until I lock the burr in place. And I can't find this happening elsewhere to find a fix!! argh

  • I had that same thing happen on mine a few years ago - the grind adjustment just started constantly slipping.
That was my one issue with that grinder, it was really great but they just used cheaper materials in important places.
Hope you can get it sorted!

  • Sounds like you should've ordered that Niche after all @Tenderloin ;-)

  • I'm clearing out loads of stuff and I have a Hario pouring kettle which is surplus to requirements.

Happy to swap it for a nice bag of beans, but must be picked up from SE27

  • Well that's a barter bargain. depending on definition of "nice" of course. Hehe.

  • fuck you
    a
    rgghhh

  • 250g of Santos from Delancey Street in Camden would do though... #amiright?

  • Sorry you're gonna have to fill in the blanks for me on that one.

  • I sometimes shudder that we spend £100 a month on beans but we don’t drink alcohol and that would be about 30 coffees a month away from the home, instead we have multiple coffees a day at home.

  • Sorry, just a reference to the dark roast love from a few pages back: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/15861620/

  • I have spent almost $100 in the last two weeks on Kombucha so don't feel bad.

  • I drank quite a lot of kombucha when in the usa, though some I had to ditch on first sip as they were really alcoholic, most were lovely.
