  • I use a Porlex Tall II for Aeropress and Clever Dripper at the office, works great, get one!

  • Some nice upgrades for the La Pavoni, really crying out for a shiny new base at this point now

  • Black mirror’s turned up today, 2 day delivery from Sigma coffee.

So now I am weighing proper doses and am realising that I am way off the documented 18g in 36 out in 24-30 secs.

It’s more like 18g in 60g out in 24-30 secs.

I assume that’s because my grind is not fine enough as I feel as though the tamp is solid enough as is.

  • I assume that’s because my grind is not fine enough as I feel as though the tamp is solid enough as is.

Yep, need to go a few clicks finer by the sounds of things (need is a strong word, no point in hitting your desired metrics if it means the coffee tastes worse!). In my experience tamping too hard can increase the amount of channelling making your problem worse rather than better.

  • Damn, son. That LP looks outstanding, Mick. I love my robot but I'd trade it in for an LP in a flash.

  • Ha! Look at it though! So evocative of visiting Italian great aunts and uncles as a kid. Totally a nostalgia thing for me.

  • Thing of beauty!

  • Thanks, I guess I need to taste what ‘good’ is 1st before deciding if it’s my good or not.

  • It’s pretty, no lie.

  • Getting some cheap scales to weigh your beans and water will make a massive difference also.

100% this, also because you might find you’re eyeballing too much coffee so you could actually save money in the long run.

Baratza Encore here too, couldn’t wish for much else at £140. Simple and small.

  • I now live for spotting the Pavoni on the counter of the Banks’ kitchen while I’m watching every episode of Fresh Prince with the kids.

  • Worth noting that I saw a few reviews saying that the Sage beats the Baratza Encore in terms of grind consistency on the coarser settings. I doubt the difference would be tasteable by the likes of me though.

The Baratza is easier to repair from what I have read.

  • Try stopping the shot at the desired weight and check the time, rather than running it for the desired time. It’ll just be a quicker dial-in. Like @mmccarthy said, don’t obsess over the “correct” numbers, but I’m sure you’ll need to be somewhere in the 23-32 second area, keeping your dose and yield constant. Dose is the most important, then yield, then time.

Tamping – just do it nice, straight and firm without breaking your wrist, and let go. Don’t bother twisting or spinning as it can actually ruin the coffee bed. Don’t stress if it’s not shiny on top, it’s about to be crushed by 9 bars of water. And a simple firm tamp is more easily repeatable, meaning you can just adjust the grind size and keep everything else constant.

  • Had no idea that was a thing! I guess after seeing Roger Moore murder and espresso with a La Pavoni I was a bit less inclined to seek out its appearances.

Though I do a similar thing with Friends and the Chemex:

  • Hugh Grant’s got one in About a Boy too :)

  • Thanks! They do have quite the look about them. May not be to everyone's tastes, but I'm quite the fan!

  • Can I interest anyone in a used twice aeropress? £10 collection only N19
Will run it through the dishwasher once more before passing on. Not the filters obvs

  • Wait, what? We talking OG Fresh Prince here? Do I have to dig the VHSs out the loft?

  • It’s all on iPlayer right now. So good.

  • Ordered the Svart. Shall report back.

  • So I have UTFS but wanted to clarify some hivemind things....

I'm finding the French Press a small bit of a faff, mostly because I tend to drink two coffees in the morning, so I am considering a different filter set up.

V60 / Clever Dripper doesn't appeal as basically that's not really different from the French Press in terms of faff / quantities challenge

The V60 is always now always associated with this.

    So no.

Moccamaster / Technivorm seems a bit overkill. Svart do one for a bit less. What other smallish (<1l) filter machines are there?

  • Clever dripper is super easy to use in terms or making and cleaning plus taste wise it's great. I'm still using v60 filters and getting 350mls out of it wth filters that fit 450mls easily.

  • V60 is much easier to use twice. Bin the filter/grounds and then rinse in hot water and go again. (I don't have a clever dripper but I would think the same principle applies). Obviously it takes a little while to make it but that is part of the fun!

The forum approved answer is buy both and then use one after the other without cleaning either... :)
