Should I sack of my weird mishmash of gearing on the BJ and find a hub gear wheel set? Nexus or Alfine?
-
• #1528
Imo, you shouldn't..
On a tandem you're going to need both higher and lower gears than you use on single bike. -
• #1529
I agree.
What’s wrong with the mishmash?
-
• #1530
Wait. You can't agree with @MisterMikkel about needing higher and lower gears than normal on a tandem, while suggesting I go 44/34 on the front of mine. Unless you just agree that he shouldn't go Nexus/Alfine...

• #1531
Hah. I suggested you to get a 50/34 front with a 11-34 on the back, because you seemed pretty set on using sram double tap that you got.
But I think you should get 3x10 tiagra :)I load mine with kids and panniers, so lowest gear is more important than a high gear.
Ideally you’d want both low and high and that’s only possible with external gears, or to some extend with a rohloff. My stoker does 25watt for up to 10 seconds, then there’s about half an hour and a pack of raisins needed to recharge.

Anyone with any experience bodging standard right hand drive cranks with a syncing chain/ring mounted to the inside/outside of a standard double or triple?? as detailed.. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tancrank.html
Seems like it could/should be doable without too much fuss? Right? I've recently acquired a Thorn Voyager tandem frame and am trying to sus out whether to try the above in the interest of £££ savings or just lump out for a tandem specific crankset.
Can't really find any example of this gearing hack on this thread. Wondering if anyone had any experience/wisdom on the matter?

My fabled tandem crankset that I have offered up here numerous times but never actually got out the shed will actually definitely be coming out of the shed in the next week or so as I am moving. It was original to my early ‘90s Dawes, but the rings on the timing cranks are relatively new (one tour on it). Assuming the shed gremlins haven’t eaten it, would it be of interest?

Think I remember this one on eBay for £550, super nice.
Thinking of taking a Dolan fixed tandem frame then adding a front brake with both discs and calipers - does such a fork exist that has both mounts and is structurally capable? Am I crazy?
-
• #1545
There are plenty of forks with disc tabs and canti/v-brake studs, but they tend to be much longer than would be a good fit on the Dolan track frame. There's very little to be gained from having two front brakes on a tandem, much better to have one front and one rear.

Does anyone on the forum own a road fixed tandem that isn’t yellow?

Phwoar, would love that!

heres mine, currently tinkering with bars and brakes.
bars are horrible for our wrists, cantis are useless, upgrading to magura hs33.

Yes. I think the only difference between T50, T100 and T200 was which parts they were specced with.
Gillott needs saving in Stoke Newington. Advertised at 200.
