them saying they want to stay out of the limelight and live privately ('cos that's why you sign a contract with a global broadcaster right?).
I guess someone who wanted to live privately could transfer some of their security costs to a global broadcaster by granting exclusive rights to their image, that way if any images or video gets published it’s the broadcaster’s lawyers who get involved and demand cash or sue the publisher into oblivion.
That’s not what they’re doing, of course.

I, too, love living in a world where there are no problems at all except such very serious ones.
(It is undoubtedly a joke.)

Every year, The Times publishes a letter from a bloke called O'Donovan, in which he lists the Royals and the number of engagements that they have had in the preceding year and applauds them for their hard work (even though the hard work is actually done by those that they visit rather than by them turning up and guzzling down tea and cakes and waving at a few humble people).
I have toyed with the idea of scrutinising the column inches that The Times devotes to Royal stories over the course of a year so as to show how hard that paper (and others) work on the Royals' behalf, pumping out vacuous propaganda to a gullible nation.
But then again, I really can't be arsed.

Worked on a (major) royal visit once, can confirm it’s a shit ton of work, nearly as much as a visit by a head of state.
But I will say that it takes an impressive calibre of people skills to do what the best of them do. Imagine having 400 stakeholders show up to a work function just see and speak with you, then spending >3 hours in the evening going through the crowd trying to give adequate face time to as many people as possible, all while remaining charming, polished and ‘majestic’. The senior royal I was with did that, without a single faux pax or social misstep, and still appeared energetic at the end.

Of course. We haven’t had a succession since 1952, and it’s a different country now. When the reality of King Chuck dawns on them, a lot of people are going to have some strong opinions about the legitimacy of a hereditary system for the first time in their lives.

While I don't exactly like royalty, I have to confess that I've always liked the fact that the Royal Train exists. I don't really know why.

I find it fascinating that people give a fuck about the royals. They contribute enormously to the economy and have very little power or influence. What's the harm? Just let them get with their weird lives.
There are privileged pillocks everywhere. The royals are probably in the most harmless category of privileged pillock. Compared to half the political establishment, for example.

Random Royal story. One of my wife's colleagues, a man in his 60s, is a good personal friend of the Queen. As in the Queen's staff will call him up and invite him round for a game of Scrabble and a glass of wine a few times a year. They met at an event decades ago and just hit it off. He's fairly posh but not blue blooded. He's a marine engineer by career.
Not an interesting story in itself but it's interesting how disconnected and distant the Queen's private life is...to the point that it feels weird to me to think that she might enjoy a glass of wine and a board game with a mate.

Quite apart from the perfectly valid reason to fuck them all off because the actual idea of a monarchy is ridiculous and outdated and being born into ruling is bullshit. Do they actually contribute massively to the economy? They're pretty bloody costly for the most part and and money from duchies could still be made, houses could still be visited, moreso when they're not occupied a few weeks a year, tat with their faces on could still be sold, imagine the cash boost with all the plates sold with the final royal faces on. Could even have them separated from their bodies, but if not it wouldn't cost much to give them a council house each and a couple of years minimum wage and send them on their way, then we'd save millions and still have all the other stuff. Then if they end up being a non sweaty paedo in the process of their harmless, weird lives, they'll hopefully get more than a little telling off after a TV car crash.

A lot of that money wouldn't stop if they did though. People are still going to look at all the big houses, maybe more if we give them a few years countdown, can even give the minor ones a fair wage as tour guides.
You’ve demoted her to HRH? How dare you, sir.
