Porridge oats

  • Porridge is great

Although at this time of year I get a little bored of it. Maybe due to the lack of summer fruit (which I have in the freezer but can never be arsed to defrost).

I always add a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg. Sometimes expensive jam instead of honey. Always raisins and a piece of fruit. Pears and plums are the best when they're in season. Every now and then I add some homemade nutella.

Sometimes I steal oatmilk from my flat mate if I've run out of the evil dairy kind. But adding oat milk to oats really annoys me for some reason.

  • These are my go-to from the local shops. Organic, low miles, compostable packaging

You must live in the sunlit uplands, you should see the state of the porridge in my local shops :(

  • Tahini - with either banana, or blueberry and maple syrup. As well as being delicious tahini seems to quell the raging mid morning hunger I get with porridge.

But adding oat milk to oats really annoys me for some reason.

    I know what you mean

  • I was pleasantly surprised to find these were good. They’re in the standard local Turkish grocery shop and the bouji organic shop (also run by lovey Turks). Used to use Sains taste the difference jumbo Scottish oats.

  • Oats not jumbo ideally, milk preferably full fat, banana. Heat and stir. Serve with bueberries or pomegranates.

  • which I have in the freezer but can never be arsed to defrost).

I put frozen fruits on top of the overnight oats and in the morning they have defrosted .
    In the fridge.

    Do you mean the brand?

    pomegranate

    Elite!

  • Chipotle flakes, chocolate protein powder and tahini.

  • My mum would only make porridge “The Scottish way” with pinhead oatmeal and water, took an absolute age to make as I recall. She would add a little milk and salt later.

  • How did I not know about this thread?

  • Pinhead oatmeal is fucking great, quite different to regular oats.

But yeah, it's more of a half hour job on a Sunday. Although I've heard old school tales of people knocking up huge batches, storing it in a kitchen drawer and taking slices for packed lunches for about a week.

  • Kavanaghs oats, 1 cup
    Milk, 1 cup
Warmed, stirred, and served in a pan.
Once cooked seeds added and then given a goodly amount of honey.
    Favourite meal of the day.

  • Oats
    Water
    1 dried mushroom
    1/4th of Stock cube
    Pinch of MSG
    Broad beans

    Toppings:
    Crispy Chilli oil and/or Siriacha

  • also why was this thread bumped?

  • I guess dicki forgot to ask your permission

    Your porridge is Vindaloo

  • Caramlized banana is a game changer and so easy. You can do it while your porridge is cooking/microwaving.

Heat a non stick pan on medium heat, peel and slice the banana lengthwise and place flat side down on the pan, fry till it starts to caramelise, turn and repeat. Toss in some pecans or sunflower seeds for the last minute.

  • this man knows

  • Vindaloo

    thats too spicy for me

  • If you're not doing this you're doing it wrong.

  • Why not buy the Quaker oat microwave single servings while you're at it?

  • Soft brown sugar or molasses sugar for the win...

  • Good shout, think my mum told me about it first, but I completely forgot. Looking forward to try it tomorrow morning.

  • 13 years later and I’ve come to the same conclusion:
“Almost as good as sesame, flax, hemp, (all crushed) with Sunflower and pumpkin seeds, which is the mix for winners! that shit'll even make you happier”
I just add chopped dried figs and dried apricots.

  • Just tried it with condensed milk and some caramel, it was lit.
