  • Yes please. Sorry for delayed response.

  • Allergic to dairy so been trying all the free from ones. The Tescos Plant Chef ones are OK, Oggs have some weird sour, almost vinegar filling, the Holland & Barrett ones are terrible and none can compete with Greggs.

  • I thought it was some secret recipe she'd found but it's from Nigella;

    https://www.nigella.com/recipes/gluten-free-apple-and-blackberry-pie

Just use the mincemeat of your choice instead.

  • ASDA luxury - decent pastry, filling could handle a bit more booze. Could easily smash this whole packet but I’m going to restrain myself.

  • Had my first deck of Gregg's today (yeah, what of it? bought 2, might start on the next one) They never disappoint.

  • Some Tesco bastard thought that their regular mince pie offering was a suitable substitute for the top of the range ones that I had ordered. Shocking.

  • I had Heston night before Christmas mince pies, they were surprisingly good. Probably the best I've had this year, alongside Greggs, tesco normal and finest

  • Perfect time to pop in to this thread.
Sainos gluten free are better than Tesco.

Our homemade ones are good but dove farm gluten free flour pastry wasn't great.
Will push the nigella link to the bakers in my house.

  • You know what happened, right? Yours were evidently eaten in transit and swapped for the inferior ones. The moral of the story is that when it comes to mince pies, you need to take matters into your own hands.

  • These are really good if you can find them. Good balance of filling/pastry (is a star-top cheating?) not quite as sweet as Greggs.

  • you need to take matters into your own hands

Like some kind of mince pie vigilante? I like this idea.

Managed to get my hands on some Tesco finest mincers this evening. Pastry is disappointingly claggy, which is a shame as the filling is excellent.

  • Went to get the 3 of us at the workshop some greggs, decide to get us all the first mincey of the season, the gregger tells me it's 25p more to get 6, so 6 were bought.

  • £1.25 more to get 12, right?

  • Broke the seal with 6 of Tesco's Finest. Good, good... Maybe a tad MoR.

    Where's Fizzy this season?

  • I sat next to Nigella at a book launch last year. Not one of her books. She looked very young and I didn’t say anything to her in case it wasn’t her and I made a tit of myself. Anyway it was her because she was in front of me in the signing queue and introduced herself as Nigella. The (American) author doing the signing didn’t know who she was. I had to tell him she was royalty (after she had gone).

I wish this were a better story, in many ways, but there it is.

  • Check out Waitrose cheap ass pies, they’re pretty good... Asda’s aren’t bad either. Gonna grab some Morrison’s this week as a comparison to see what ones are best... dairy free are usually good but you need to get through a few to work out which ones are best

  • That’s a story you can dine out on for hours.

did you smell her? I bet you smelt her.

  • Thought I’d nailed the advent calendar for my wife this year. So did she. Great minds mince alike.

    Expect daily yuletide reviews.

  • Are they different every day?

  • Think so... I'll let you know on the 25th.

  • Trialed a mince pie from the local bougie baker today. Slightly controversial puff pastry lid on a traditional shortcrust base. Absolutely banging nonetheless, will be heading back to spend a fortune on as many as are available.

  • Shitty weekend so i dashed to Sainsbury’s before it closed to get some mincemeat. In and out in 5 minutes and dodged the Sunday daydreamers for the most part. Reasonable start.
Confirmed as of today, I have my mum and in-laws round for Xmas Day so thought I should get some practice in to avoid potential for sub-par pies. Haven’t made mincers in since I lived with my parents (15ish years ago), so I wasn’t holding out much hope. Fast forward 90mins (longer than anticipated!)...They’re definitely not lookers but they taste pretty good and the pastry is nice and short.
The addition of satsuma segments and chopped apple makes for a more mellow flavour. Might jack one up with some brandy butter. Where do we stand on Christmassy condiments?
The OH popped home for 5mins, having been out all afternoon and took eight, EIGHT(!) to give to her parents. Good job it’s the season of goodwill.
Looking forward to a couple after my burrito (which I’m also now making since she’s gone to see her parents.) 🙄

  • Brandy butter is bangin. Terrifying when you add up the mincer+boozebutter calorie count though.
