Nice - I've recycled a pair of old Rapha arm warmers and they do the job. I find after a while they feel tight around my elbows but by then I'm usually warmed up, so just take them off.
I've also taken to wearing a base layer on top, so I can remove this easily - which sounds a bit weird now that I've written it down...

Thanks so much for the recommendations! I'm trying to track down the HH baselayers, and in the meantime I've ordered a merino baselayer and some slightly lairy armwarmers. Come at me, winter!
