  • Yeah, to be honest the 47mm Horizons have handled most stuff except cornering through big muddy sections, oh and the Surrey section I hit too fast and with too much tyre pressure and bounced myself into a wall but that's more user error. I'm looking ahead to off-road touring though where speed is of little consequence but durability and I guess confidence/safety are more important.

  • Got some used WTB Resolutes 650b x 42mm. 3 of em. In 6/10, 7/10 and 8/10 conditions.

Bought em off here but my BB is too low for 42mm and pedal-strike is a problem.

    Anyone keen for £45 posted?

  • Can't help there, wheel builder suggested 25mm internal for 47c-50c tyres. Won't have them for a few weeks but can measure up when they arrive.

  • Cheers. I'll keep asking around but may just pull the trigger on a set at some point, but if you could post when you get them that'd be handy if I haven't already committed.

Fitted the Teravail Rutland (the knobbliest ones) and the 650bx47c are measuring 46mm wide on 25mm internal rims.

  • Cool. I'm thinking of going back to 700C to get some better pedal clearance for ruts and such but I still like the idea of a rugged, fat, dynamo set.

  • I have a couple of sets of 650b tyres sitting here.. both done about 50 miles max.. so nearly as new..

WTB byways 47mm tan wall - great fast tyre, but too wet in good old Northern Ireland, so needed more knobbles.. hence the GK's
Panaracer Gravelking 1.95 - these measure up at 51-52mm on my hunt wheels, which are too big for my CDF frame - all black

I ended up going for the 1.75 Gravelking SK tyres.. £50 per set + post at about £4..

  • I think you would notice a bit more speed, but not a lot.. also byways are a bit noiser.. maybe a larger contact patch?? I have mine for sale.. along with some big SK's..

  • anyone got any tyres 650b 42c-47c to sell? not too fussed what they are

  • I've got some used but fine when removed 42 WTB Resolutes here.

  • Ah yeah that'd be awesome, how much are you looking for?

  • Absolutely no clue. Knock a bit off whatever they're going for on the bay?

Also, they're in west london. Are you also in London? Drop off, picking up or would they need to be posted?

  • happy to collect, will pm you

  • Got the cash. Thanks dude. Nice to meet you. Let me know if you ever decide to "go long" and I'll give all my advice or what I like to call "What not to do".

  • Awesome, cheers! Nice to meet you too, was great to chat :)

  • I’m after some new tyres. I find my 650x48 gravel kings to be a bit slippery in the wet, so I want to replace them. I have grand bois hetre on another bike which I think are great but they’re expensive and hard to find.
Any recommendations for something good in the wet and 42mm- 49mm wide, not too expensive?

  • G-one speed comes in 50mm

  • Lots of options on bike24 for okay prices:
    Donnelly Strada
    G-one speed
    Panaracer Pari-Moto
    WTB Horizon/Byway

  • I thought GKs were quite soft? G-Ones definitely reported to be although not tried myself. I wouldn't say that WTB Horizons are particularly grippy but they're pretty durable.

  • Yeah to be fair I haven't ridden any of those tyres, my bad.

  • In theory for muddy #nogravel skinny 700s are better than fat 650s right? Or am I missing a trick? I'm thinking of dabbling and would appreciate some sage advice.

  • I don't care about this "digs through the mud to grip" bollocks. Just throw the fattest fucking tyres on you can that still allow some clearance for mud if you're riding in mud.

  • Depends on the type of mud though...yeah? #hippybaiting #hippyisalwaysright

  • If you're picking your tyres based on mud types I'd question your life choices up to that point. :P

It's not just about mud type it's about what proportion of your ride(s) are going to be in this mud. I've ridden slicks through mud and I've walked through mud, it depends how much there is and if you can keep momentum up on skinny or fat slick tyres. Knobbies and all that MTB shit, no idea. I'm shit on whatever tyre you put me on.
