Must be an optical illusion, I thought it was a standard crankset. I guess in the same way 28c looks impossibly skinny now, compacts look pretty big to me!

It’s actually 50/39 ‘cause I’m dumb.

Other than funny looks, any reason not to run a 700C wheel on the front and a 650B wheel on the back of a bike? I have a 700C dynamo wheel I wanted to use.

Well 7+0+0+6+5+0= 18 and 18 is 3 6s or 666. I wouldn’t recommend it, seems quite malfeasant.

I think it's a thing in mountain biking and called a mullet bike so you definitely should.
-
• #2607
For a number of reasons I'm going to stick to 650B front and rear for this ride. But look like it'd work ok.

Recently built an extra set of 650s but didn't use the same rear hub, now I have to adjust the caliper each time I change.
Is there such a thing as a centre lock shim? -

I’ve got five brand new 27.5 x 2.1”-2.6” inner tubes, anyone interested before I chuck them on classifieds? £1.50 each /£7 for all 5. From ITS (rip)

I'm pricing up a second set of 650b wheels. Currently using WTB KOM i23 with 47mm Horizons.
For gravel ultras and bikepacking/touring where I might run 50mm gravel tyres should I stick with i23 or should I go for wider i25? Or 30g more per rim for the i25 Tough version?

vs.
https://www.wiggle.co.uk/wtb-kom-light-i25-tcs-rim/
vs.
https://www.wiggle.co.uk/wtb-kom-tough-i25-tcs-rim/I've heard arguments for using skinnier rims so the tyre sidewall isn't so exposed.

About to build up some i25 Kom light for a friend. I would have thought that a minimum for less squish roll over. Don't know how low you plan to run. Personally I'd have gone for 30mm if i hadn't gone cheap skate on my rims.
-
• #2613
Hmm, really? The i23 have been fine. I mean I accidentally ran them at less than 20psi and that lead to some sketchy cornering until I put a bit more air in the front but today I was riding at 40psi and they were fine. I'll probably try down to 30psi and see what that's like on road and off.
I'm not even sure I'll be able to get the 50mm tyres to fit but I'll have a damn good go. I wish I could just have a 23mm and 25mm wheel and the tyres I want to use and then measure them up. Pain in the arse all this guesswork.

• #2614
Ultimately yes it doesn't really matter. Any width will work. And probably 23 to 25 difference is indistinguishable to a normal human?
But 50mm will easily fit your tripster. -
• #2615
I've just had a look and with the 47mm Horizon there's maybe 4mm each side so it might be a tighter fit than I first thought, although it depends on the shape of the tyre and how much the sides balloon out.
-
• #2616
Not quite the same Tripster, but this guy ran 50 up front then 45 in back:
https://welovemountains.net/teravail-sparwood-gravel-tyres-reviewed/ATR has cooler forks, not sure of clearance difference to mine though

Teravail Cannonball come in a 'durable' 47mm option which might be another good option.
https://teravail.com/tires/cannonball#TR2698Although: "When inflated to 40psi, the tyre (rather disappointingly) came up at 43mm wide on a set of Mason x Hunt Adventure Sport 650b wheels, 4mm less than claimed."
https://advntr.cc/teravail-cannonball/"Mounted on Zipp 303 Firecrest carbon rims (21 mm internal width) and inflated to 50 psi, the tan-sidewall Cannonballs measured 48 mm wide at the casing, and 49.5 mm knob-to-knob." https://www.gravelbike.com/teravail-cannonball-tires/

My panaracer 48s roll out to 50mm. I'll take some photos later of them mounted. But pretty happy with the clearance front and rear.

They certainly missed a trick not adding the mounting options on the standard AT fork. And I'm not spending £400 on changing it.

Did a lot of reading into the Teravail 650b options, went with the Rutland. Also read the same comment but saw others elsewhere stating they came up to size.

• #2621
They the file tread ones? They're basically slick right? Was looking for something with a bit more grip compared to the Horizons. Once I kill the Horizons this wheelset/bike will be primarily off-road.
-
• #2622
£400?!?! The frameset was £700.
-
• #2623
Maybe they'd mis-labelled a 42mm version?
-
• #2624
The 47mm Teravail stuff is suggesting ideal rim width of 23mm. Maybe I should stick to WTB i23s?

I've got the SKs too I could switch them over. The 650s were meant to be a pure off road set but am loving the comfort on road and only marginally slower.
It’s more of a road+ bike. 50/39 & 11-32 get all the road bits dirt roads in around here. I find myself running out of gear on some of the trails around here but they’re mtb trails if we’re being honest.
